  • Help choosing amp

I am goint to use 2 12" Eclipse SW9122-12 in a sealed box, they have a combined rms of 1500w. How's that for a sysytem and also what kind of amp would I need??

    Re: Help choosing amp

    just depends...

amps are expensive... and to get an amp good enough to hit your subs to their full potential you will need somthing that is not cheap.. just look around

you can allways look at JL, Alpine, RF, all those nice name brands...
also look locally around for a used amp... thats how i got mine and it POUNDS (well for me)

      Re: Help choosing amp

Those subs should hit pretty nicely. As for an amp, look for something around 1500 watts in a single channel. That is, if youre subs are wired in parallel, if not, then I'd look for a sub with 2 channels, each around 750W.

I'm sure you meant to say amp....

And these subs are dual 4 ohm correct? These means you will be using a 1 ohm load. Just FYI.

Ok thanx for the info but are their any extra specifications that I should consider for this exact subwoofer model??

BX1605D (that is what I use wired at 2.75 OHM into a 15 dvc sub in 1 foot sealed). For the price, you can't get a better deal. If you want to spend a little more money, JL 1000.1 mono amps are fantabulous.

What's your ohm load going to be?

Get a real amplifier if you want real performance.
                http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/produ...3&locale=en_US
This Rockford amp is rated at 125w x2. It will BLOW AWAY that Hifonics crap with its overrated output. Remember that all watts are not created equal. That Hifonics amp cannot and will not give you 1600 watts. That is a joke.

                  Re: Help choosing amp

why waste all that money on a BestBuy $800+ amp?

yes, the hifonics brutus amp does not quite make the 1600 watts (which is why its being recommended for his setup), but it will still make MUCH more power at 1/3 of the cost compared to that overpriced RF amp.

the price aside, that RF amp is NOT 1 ohm stable in mono bridged mode
those subs are dual 4 ohm voice coil. he could wire them down to a 1 ohm load (a setup that the RF amp would be incompatible with).

how would you suggest that he wire his subs with that amp? 250 watts into each sub at 2 ohm? enlighten me...

bottom line: for his application, compared to the hifonics brutus amp, the rockford fosgate amp will put out 1/3 of the performance for 3x the money.

                      Re: Help choosing amp

I am not saying the hifonics amp doesnt have its place in the audio market, but why would you hook it up to high end subwoofers? Using this logic, you would put retreads on a Z-06. Doesnt make sense. I would use the hifonics to power a couple sony or pioneer subs. Good match.
When I stated that the RF amp would kick the crap out of the Hifonics I wasnt kidding. Watts = amps x volts. Cheesy amps like that put out roughly 9-10 amps. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that 1600 watts is not possible with that type of power. Another thing you want to keep in mind, is every time you halve the impedence of an amplifier you also halve its dampning figure. Easily one of the last things you want when trying to power subwoofers!! So, do what you like, I couldnt care less if you want to hook up a cheesy amp to your subs, just trying to help out with some education.
Surely you know that you can buy a 100 watt amplifier for $79 just like you can buy a 100 watt amplifier for $600. Does this mean you are just plain stupid if you buy the better (more expensive) amp? No, it means that you care more about the music and the quality of the playback. I have sold high end electronics for over 15 years and I know one thing FOR SURE: The general public is totally clueless when it comes to comparing amplifiers. The only question 99% of people ask is "how many watts??". This would be a valid question only if you were comparing products that are rated in the same manner. Also, I am not a Rockford fanatic, but they do make good, high quality amplifiers. Soundstream makes amps I would be happy to hook up to your subs. At the very least I would consider Alpine, Kicker or JL for middle of the road quality.
Again, Iam not here to argue, just hopefully help out a bit. You have some high end subs and if you want to get the most out of them, they need a high end amp.

Yeah I'll be using a 1ohm load and was thinking about using either the VISONIK V900XD (rated at 1800w rms at 1ohm) or MA Audio HK2000D. i know the ma audio is the best choice but there's a nice price difference. Is it worth it??

also is the SPL Z1X-3000D any good??

Don't be calling hifonics cheesy, i admit i wouldn't buy their lower line amps but their XX series are killer amps. My amp that is "rated" at 2000wrms @ 1 ohm actually does like 24xx wrms @ 1.1 ohm. Youre comparing rockfords top of the line amp to a low line Hifonics amp. And i know for sure that that BXi will still put out more power that the Power, whether that power will be as clean or not is debatable.
ANd rockford also has lower lines, aka. the punch series.
FYI soundstream has some type of affiliation with Power Acoustik if that says anything. (i would still buy their higher end amps though, just a fact)

in all that fluff that you just stated, you totally ignore that this amp that you so thoughtfully suggested will do nothing but 250 watts to each sub for this application.

you also ignore that it wont be able to handle the 1ohm load.

a hifonics brutus 1605D amp on his subs would not be like putting retreads on a z06, but since you offered the analogy; the amp you are suggesting is like putting 13 inch daytons on a z06. nice rims (for some), but wrong application

for more information, hit up caraudio.com and check out their forums. they even have birthsheet resources that will show you actual power.

something to understand about the hifonics brutus amp: yes, they do not quite put out rated power (using a reasonable voltage) and as one bad mofo stated, don't expect them to be the cleanest sounding amps at that 1 ohm load. imo, it is an unbeatable value.

kelso gringo, good luck selling your car.
