Hi guys I have a 98 Firebird and when I got the car it came with just one two button remote that is not a genuine GM remote and only unlocks the doors. It looks sort of like a small seat back in shape and has the name persuit on it etc.

I got a replacement GM remote for 98 Firebird, that has the lock, unlock, rear and horn symbol button but I can't program it following the instructions in the handbook. "Turn key to this position, remove radio fuse etc etc". Is there a code I should be looking for on the door sticker that tells me what sort of keyless entry/alarm system I have fitted? When I go the the program routine the car does not lock and un-lock the doors when I go through the run-off key cycle three times within five seconds

    any help appreciated.

    Re: keyless entry

It sounds like your car didn't come from the factory with keyless entry system. The cheapest way to get keyless entry installed is just get unlock programmed in, which is the most useful of all the buttons anyway. I say you should just try to be happy with the unlock feature and get an alarm/keyless entry installed.

      Re: keyless entry

if you post the last 8 digits of your vin number, someone who works at a dealership should be able to look it up and tell you if you were factory equipped with the keyless entry....this is what i had someone do for me.
      good luck

        Re: keyless entry

Thanks for the replies so far. I am not that interested in the alarm side of things I just want to be able to open the doors and the trunk via the remote.

        My Vin is 2G2FS22K1W2209094
        hope that helps:tup:

          Re: keyless entry

Well now we can leave it up to someone who works at a dealership to look it up and tell you for sure, but i would say the easiest way to check if your car was factory equipped would be to use the door/trunk key to open up the driver door, and wait like 10-15 seconds without starting the car. If it's like my car, the alarm with sound. That's how i found out i had at least an alarm, and i think the alarm was bundled with keyless entry and vis vers

if you have the ability to unlock the car, i would just be happy with that, unless you want to install keyless entry.

            Re: keyless entry

I checked the numbers on the back of the remote and they are exactly the same as the ones on the back of the remote that you mentioned in one of your earlier posts. As to the Remote I have, as I said it's a two button none GM type but only one button works. Press to lock and then press the same button to un-lock. The second button does nothing. All I want to do is remote open the doors and the rear hatch.

              Re: keyless entry

you might be able to go to a place like bestbuy and have them set it up so that the second button opens the trunk. Aside from that i can't help you much because i can't look up your vin.. sorry

alright i have 95 camaro I know diferent year and its not a turd but with mine i just jump 2 pins on the obd2 connector and push the new controllers buttons. You should be able to go to your local library and use mitchell on demand or the other(drawing a blank) to look up the prosses just to be sure

Hi, well it looks like I don't have an alarm just power windows and door/trunk locks etc. So I guess I got the wrong remote.  Can anyone who has a genuine GM remote without the alarm function give me the FCC number off the back etc so I can try and get the correct remote of Ebay or similar.

                  Thanks Vic
