well... no not hardly 1800 rms... its rated at 1200 rms @ 1 ohm... and like i said the gain was turned half way up.. so my guess would be really no more than 1000 watts... but im no amp expert

the gain is not a volume knob.
if you look closely you'll note that it is intended to be set according to the voltage of your head unit's RCA outputs.
if the amp was not rated at 1 ohm, i'm surprised it didn't go into protection mode.
if the subs are rated 500 watts RMS, they really should have been wired at 4 or maybe even 2 ohm.
it sounds like you did send a nice clipped square wave into that sub until the voice coil overheated...
the amp IS rated at 1 ohm... and i have the voltage matched to my headunit.. thats some other setting than the one im talkin about.. maybe i have them mixed up i'm not for sure.. i'm at school right now so i cant just go look.. i'll try to remember to when i get out before work...
The only control knobbs you will find on an amplifier are bass boost, sensitivity (That is the one you match with the output voltage on the HU), and crossover adjustments. You are most likely describing either the bass boost or the sensitivity setting. Neither of these directly control the amount of power going to the speakers.
well there are about 4 or 5 on my amp... i dont know off the top of my head what they are.. but i do know that the amp is matched to the headunits voltage or whatever....
Turn the bass boost down or kick the gain down a bit more... You are probably overpowering the subs, Rockford may not be as great as they once were, but they still hold up decently well. Other thing to watch out for is if need a subsonic filter set for your box or a lower crossover setting, you could possibly have the sub physically moving too far.
There is a lot that can take out a sub, and without a very strong knowledge yourself and without being able to see or hear it, its kinda hard.
Also just curious did you get into a car that was cold, like cold outside or a decently moist morning and just rock the stereo up before the cars inside got good and warm. I have seen a lot of people blow subs by turning them way up when their voice coils are ice cold, or have a bit of condensation on them. In fact I have done it myself.
nah it wasnt cold.. it was on my way home after i had been somewhere... and i dont think it was even that cold at the time... i like to think i know a good bit about subs and what not... but i dont know much about tuning amps... i just dont know what all knobs i have on my amp off the top of my head...and i keep forgetting to look cause i'm busy with work and what not... oh well.. if i want another one xmas is comin up and and i have money anyway...
maybe i should upgrade and get like a T1 or somethin.. lol are those good?

The T1s are a world from any of the P line. Thats where is really steps to something you would see in a car at a competition. How big is your box? ported/sealed? whats your crossover set at? do you have a sub-sonic filter on your amp, if so whats that set at? Also is there a bass boost on the amp, if so whats that set at?
Just a few quick questions when you get the chance and remember to look to check on. Depending on your settings there, one of us may be able to help you out and stop you from having this disaster... It's no good blowing up speakers...
umm.... my box is sealed.. i honestly have no idea how big it is.. i bought it and my first subs together alreayd in it.. i wanna say yes to subsonic filter but im not 100%.. im at school so i have no chance to look right now...
umm i'm thinkin i might just sell my p3 and buy a t1 12 and look into a stealth box... i'd kinda like to have what little trunk area firebirds have back.. lol
would a t1 fit in a stealth box? i dont know the dimensions of either so i'm clueless at the moment.. and the way the schools computers are i dont think i can look any of it up...
*edit* looks like 10 inch is the biggest subthump has for stealth boxes :(... does anyone know if theres a 12 inch one made by anyone?

Not really enough room, and no its not big enough the T's need more airspace than that box provides also. Unfortunately big bass requires big space. Anyways you can send a pic of your current box? Might be able to guesstimate your airspace by looking.
lol once again i am at school.. so i dont have acess to my pictures.. maybe after work tonight i'll remember to look.. i know there is one on my home computer... i'll see what i can do..
but thanks for all the help nikos.. i appreciate it greatly.. usually when i post a thread about something it will get a few replies that dont really help.. but you've helped clear up alot a ****.. lol
i have a full rockford rosgate sound system and i also find that the headunit it aweful, mine it 2 years old and wont even play cd's past track 6 anymore. i hate it but cant afford a new one right now.
So my truck is finally getting some work done, after 17 years, Oil pressure sensor went out and it’s located under the lower intake manifold. Have to...
