ok...definitly wanting to upgrade my sound system. Im not wanting to rattle my car apart or care about being heard from a mile away. Just want to have good, crisp sound in my car. I was thinking about 2 10's or possibly just 1 12'. Also needing to have good components. I was thinking Infinity on the components and a JL Audio sub. Hope some of you stereo guru's could point me in the right direction as far as best sound for the $$.

I think you have a good start here. I would personally do 2 10's they are a bit cleaner and nicer. As far as the car, our cars are rattle boxes, its going to take a lot of sound dampening and work to get it to shut up at higher volumes. Actually if you don't like to crank on it, a single 10" say a W6 that takes a bit more power might be enough in its own.

Infinity as much as I'm not a big fan of them myself, they are good speakers, especially for the price. If money is something you are kinda trying to work with here, I wouldn't spend the money on the JL sub, there are a ton of subs equal and better than JL for cheaper.

Honestly best bet to start, is walk into a few shops around and see what you like the sound of, every different model sounds a bit different.

    But look at-
    Polk
    Infinity
    Alpine
    Eclipse

There really is a fairly endless list of the upper-midrange product lines, where you get good quality without paying blood.

Just curious, but what car would you be referring to as a rattle box?

My '97 firebird didn't rattle other than the license plate (which was easily taken care of) and the back glass from vibrations with 4 Memphis M-Class 12's mounted in an enclosure facing upward towards the hatchback.

I'm sure if I would have left it in there for longer it would have became a raddlebox, but unless you have had 4 12's pointed at your hatchback, I'm not sure you can imagine just how friggin' hard the bass can hit. I took it out due to it hurting my chest everytime the bass hit. Went down to 1 12" sub and put it facing downward in the back of the trunk where it sinks in.

How are those Memphis subs? I work right down the street from a Mobile Audio retailer that sells all Memphis stuff. Are you happy with the product?

my single 12 flexes the doors a good centimeter. plus my hatch and spoiler jump around just as much on low notes. I have painted a pillars and the dash moves around enough to take the paint off the bottom of them.

I spent only $350 and 45 mins installing my MTX sub/amped thunderform. I used to have huge set-ups, and many would say it's pretty entry level, but i use my cash for other things now besides mega-watt SPL stereos.
my moonsoon stereo + mtx sub offer enough sound to keep me happy, and room in my trunk.
            just my 2 cents.

Our car are just notorious for making noise. Hell they are to start with, really bad if you have t-tops...

My 2 10" MbQuarts made my rear end sound like a RICER! Until I dampened it anyways.

Do you want clean sound, or a lot of bass from a smaller sub or set...

Memphis isn't too bad, they make some good stuff, some crap, but all around they are not sound quality material.

i know my circuit city just sold me 2 MTX 4500s for just over 100 bucks it was buy 1 get 1 free, i had 1 JL audio 12WO in my car before and swapped it out for 1 of the MTXs until i have time to build another box and it kicked my jl audio sub's ***, much more clear and crisp bass for listening to rock AND rap like me, or you could get the even better sounding 5500 which i think they said are about 150 a piece.. but they sound amazing
