  • Sail panel speakers not working after new head unit fitted

Hi there - and yes I have read all the stickies about the stereo unit!

    (94 Firebird V6 3.4, Monsoon 10-speaker system).

I've replaced the GM head unit (CD player, graphic eq) with a JVC head unit and spliced in the aerial, supply and speaker leads correctly (I've double checked over and again).
The head unit and the door and trunk speakers are working fine.
However; the sail panel subwoofers are not outputting a music signal but what I do get from them is a continuous "wooooooo", somewhere about the "A" below middle "C" and at very low (but noticeable) volume.
Is this something to do with the onboard amplifier not switching on properly? I'm given to understand it's the speaker signal that activates it?
    Anyone any any clues?
    Many thanks.
    Baffled Malc.

from what i understand is that the way the system works is that the sail panel speakers only play mids/lows so that is why you arent getting any sound. what i did to get sound to those speakers was split the rear speaker leads from the deck directly into the speakers.

Hmmm don't think this is the issue - there's no sound from these speakers at all from the radio/cd unit (just the 'woooooo') whether faded front or rear.
I guess it's not picking up the signal somehow but I can't see why - all the speaker wiring on the new head unit maps directly to the in-car wiring and there are no 'spare' wires left over from my installation.........

I've got a JVC HU as well. I'm gonna say it's our HU, cuz my subs do it too. I do get sound out of them, but whenever I skip a song, change the station, or turn the HU on/off, they play that until it picks up a signal. I'm trying to save up for a new HU, that's what I'd recommend. JVC isn't a great brand or anything, it's just a cheap getter-byer brand. I may be wrong, but I'm gonna go with that.

Try taking the wires for the mids and hook them up to the rears and see if they work though. You may have a broken wire somewhere touching bare metal, so the current it flowing right through it giving you a "wooo" sound

all i can say is just lay new wiring from the speakers directly into the deck, by passing the in car wiring. thats what i did

But I still can't figure out why the subs don't work when they did with the original head unit. There's no wires I haven't hooked up, I'm still convinced there's some reason that the slave amp isn't powering up.
