  • Installing whole new system into 99 and a lot of questions

    I am going to be installing a new head unit, running wire to the amp, building a box for the sub, and bypassing the monsoon amp.
    1st off, 1999 with monsoon system- about bypassing the monsoon amp, I plan to use the 2 door panel speakers and the 2 rear hatch speakers, the middle speakers which are "subwoofers" I will leave disconnected. I plan to disconnect the amp connector and splice the front and hatch speakers there. Here is a rundown:
    Headunit front speaker outputs and rear speaker outputs (8 wires all together, 4 front and 4 in back) --> to monsoon amp PLUG , cut wires near plug and solder/crimp --> wire loops right back to speaker.
    That takes care of main speakers and eliminates the monsoon amp. Only question is that I am looking at http://ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=612644 and seeing there are 1 set of front inputs and 2 sets out front outputs
    1. Front speaker inputs
    2. front speaker tweeter outputs
    3. front speaker midrange outputs
    Which ones do I hook up? I would assume the midrange but I'm not sure. Same question for the rear hatch speakers.
    I am also trying to find a wiring harness that works for the monsoon sound system.
    I helped my brother with his civic and also did a system in the saturn, but those you simply bought a wiring harness and ran your power/rca cables back for the subwoofer.
    Monsoon can suck my ballz.

    From what I can understand, all I need to do is cut and solder:
    E1 --> F6
    F1 --> F7
    E2 --> E16
    E3 --> E15
    E4 --> F14
    E5 --> F13
    E7 --> F15
    E5 --> F16

    Ok so im a little confused, so are you going to be using the monsoon amp at all? If not you dont need to worry about rewrining it just take it out. The tweeters are not really powered by the amp they are just wired through it I beleive; the front wiring for the tweeter is "tweeter" on the amp chart and the rear hatch speaker tweeter is called "extended range speaker" so that how you wire the tweeters. Also, There is really no such thing as "midrange" sound it is just the size of the speaker, there are only Highs and Lows = (Tweeters "vocals and such" and Subs "bass") so "midranges" are just small subs that output Low sounds. So, for the front "midrange" speakers are wired to the midrange outputs of the amp and the hatch "midrange" (wich is supposedly somehow classified as a subwolfer) is wired at the rear subwoofer speaker output from the amp.

    Hope that helps, if i am wrong about anything or missed anyting please some one tell me b/c i only have a limited knowledge about the monsoon system.

      I dont mean to sound rude but I think you have no idea what you're talking about with the monsoon system. If I just "take out" the monsoon amp, then I will have all my speaker inputs going to a connector that is NOT plugged into the amp, and then the outputs also on that connector. It's like running speaker wire to a speaker and not connecting it

        well I meant after taking it out connect the speakers somewhere obviously! but you dont need to keep in your car and you dont need to loop it back some where if you are using a aftermarket HU. but if you plan on using the amp only on certain speakers then yea you keep in and power the speakers you want. I dont know about looping the non used speaker wires comming from the amp, i would probably assume you would not have to though.

          You are making it way to difficult.

          Forget all the stock equipment, remove it all.

          Step One:
          Connect Power, Ground and Remote to HU
          Step Two:
          Connect the new HU RCA OUTPUT to the new AMP RCA INPUT.

          Step Three:
          Connect Power, Remote, Ground of Amp.

          Step Four:
          Connect AMP Speaker OUTPUT to Speakers.

          Run all new speaker wire. The hardest part is removing interior panels and reinstalling them.

            Re: Installing whole new system into 99 and a lot of questions

            Running all new wiring seems way to difficult when I can simply strip and solder a set of wires, and avoid the hassle of running new speaker wire.

              So you're saying that I take out the monsoon amp and hook up my HU? therefore my outputs would run back to the amp which is not there, and it will magically work? LOL read up more on the monsoon system.

                Re: Installing whole new system into 99 and a lot of questions

                Keep in mind that the Monsoon speakers are 2-ohms. Wiring up the factory Monsoon speakers directly to an aftermarket HU will cause the HU to run at a 2-ohm load. I wouldn't recommend doing that. It may work for a while but this will create a lot of heat inside the aftermarket HU...and it could eventually burn up the HU's internal amp. Aftermarket HU's are not really meant to run at lower ohms like that.

                Since you are going to be using the factory Monsoon speakers, why not just keep the Monsoon Amp and use that to power them? You can still install your new aftermarket HU and another amp to power your subs...plus use the Monsoon Amp without any splicing/looping. All you need is a dash kit and a wiring harness for the new HU. (dash kit and wiring harness can be purchased at Walmart, Best Buy, Circuit City...) Only reason why I suggest this is because the Monsoon Amp has built in crossovers for each particular Monsoon speaker. Your Monsoon speakers will be running at full-range (highs and lows going to every speaker, even the tweeters) if you wire them directly to an aftermarket HU. If you were replacing all the Monsoon speakers with aftermarket speakers, THEN I would recommend bi-passing/looping the Monsoon Amp all together. Better yet, if you were replacing all the Monsoon Speakers with aftermarket speakers, I would power them all with a nice aftermarket amp.

                You can do what you want. What you want to do will work but it's more work than what's needed plus you won't be gaining much.

                  How would I go about disabling the stock sub woofers? Just cut them at the wiring harness going into the amp?

                    Re: Installing whole new system into 99 and a lot of questions

                    Sounds like your going to a whole lot of extra effort for nothing. I've installed a couple systems on differenct cars with the monsoon system. They sell dash kits for camaros. Get the plug and play dash wiriing harness slap in your new hu and run a remote wire (the new dash kit will be labeled with the wires your asking about). Why do you want to cutout anything from the monsoon system your new sub/subs will over power those subs anyway but if u must remove them just cut the connectors right at the speakers you want to disable slap a little liquid electric tape on the end. Then if u ever want to sell the car u have the wires right there hook it right back up. Saves confusion later, just makre sure the wires won't be able to touch. If you still want to find out the wiring configuration go down to your local library look up the service repair manual for our car and i'm sure they'll have a wiring schematic in there.
