  • What kind of resistor should I get?

    Hello, I seem to have the famous "VATS" problem everyone seems to have. I have read numerous posts from many many members and have finally found two solutions:

    1) Go to a dealership and get it fixed. However, I'm a broke college student and am unable to pay $200-$300 to get it fixed.
    2) Bypass the security system by buying a resistor from Radioshack for like a couple of bucks and then installing it.

    My question is, since I am going to be doing choice #2, I need to get the OHM reading from the sensor on the key. I am just wondering, for anyone who has done this or anyone that might know, what kind of resistor do I need from Radioshack? Is the ohm reading different on every car or is there one for all cars? And if there is a different reading for them all, how can I get one? Anyone knows where I can find an OHM meter?

    Go to Radio Shack have some one there ohm out or check the chip on your key. Get a 1/4 watt ressitor of that size and you will have what you need.

      gman has got it covered.

      But if you want to keep the vatts, it might be that the resistor in you key is bad. Aftermarket keys normally don't last as long as the factory ones. My system was acting up, i went to a locksmith and had them make me a key out of a GM key, and it's worked just dandy.

        So what you are saying is I should get the resistor AND go to a locksmith and get a copy of the GM key but without the resistor in the key? Or just go a locksmith and get them to make me a copy of the GM key? 'cause i thought only dealership did the GM keys?

          If you're looking to replace or copy your car's ignition key, you'll need to know what VATS chip you have in your current key. Grab any meter that measures resistance. Touch a probe to each of the metal leads going across the VATS chip in your key. Use the chart below:

            Thanks bro, I bought the potentiometer yesterday and installed it today, it was easier than i thought and the only thing that took the longest was connecting the wires to the potentiometer's ends w/electrical tape. The car has started up fine with the "sensor-less" key which was copied from my original GM key. I'm very happy and I encourage anyone having this problem to go ahead and fix it this way.

                Bonemaro, look at the link down below, its those tiny white wires right after the VATS connector, which are then followed by the orange covering you see there. You have to unplug the VATS connector and then take the connector along with the white wires and cut right before getting to the orange covering. Once you have the connector in hand, just connect it to your resistor and plug it back in and VOILA! Here is a guy that did it and wrote a thread for it:

                  FYI our keys are a number 11 blank.

                    I have my resistors all ready and have the panel off and found the wires. Next question is which of the two wires do I put the resistors on?

                    Also, do I need to have a new key made that does NOT have the resistor on the key?

                      From the picture above....



                      You need to cut that "orange" wire after the orange and before the VATS connector.
                      After you have the 2 different wires, connect the resistor to both ends of the wires with crimps or good 'ol solder.
                      Then tape em up.

                        So I put my resistors in BOTH wires? I need a resistance of 3k OHMs. I have 3 1K OHMs soddered together. So would I get my 3 resistors and put them in one of the two wires, and then get another 3 resistors and put it in the other wire? That would make a total of 6 resistors and 6k Ohms though, unless I am not understanding something.

                        Sorry for all the difficulty, but I feel like I am just one step from the finish line with this project! :) Thanks for everyones help so far!
