i saw this at best buy today. i think its basically what ive been looking for. I wanted some form of a touchscreen and be able to attach an external hard drive to it with songs on it, and basically have it be a giant i-pod. i was thinking i would have to buy one of those car computers and create some massive system just for that. i found this, it has a usb input (external hardrive has that) and its a multi media system. im thinking this is pretty much all i need. i found a video on c-net about it but it just talked about the stupid i-pod thing, like every other dumb screen has. they did have one part where the put in a cd with mp3's on the cd, and it was pretty much what i want, just on a cd instead of h.d. basically im just asking if anyone knows about these or if anyone knows if i can just plug the hard drive in with the usb and have it work like a windows media player type of deal. thanks.

With most external hard drives, the power is either from the USB port or from an external source (AC plug). First, I would find out if the USB port supplies enough voltage to power an external hard drive.

it has its own power supply that needs to be plugged into an outlet. i know its not the same as the power cars put out so i will need to convert that also. but im just wondering if once i get that all said and done, if the usb hard drive connection will work with the head unit. and if it would have a nice list of songs like the mp3 cd did for it. im guessing it would, because its pretty much the same thing, just on a much bigger "cd".

my friend works at staples (where i got this hard drive, 400gigs, for only 80 bucks, on sale) and he said the biggest size they have for usb powered hard drives are only 160. im sure thats enough but i already have this one. but actually......i should jsut get one of those :-/

would that be a lot easier?

A JVC kv-px9 is a touchscreen and it has a 20GB HDD

put in a cd with mp3's on the cd, and it was pretty much what i want, just on a cd instead of h.d.

something to think about is get A is Multimedia Receiver with GIGA mp3
a single DVD can store approximately
2500 songs mp3/wma or 100 songs WAV ( cd quality )

I have a cd/sd receiver ( sd memory card ) I have about 125 songs on it

the problem here is i listen to a crazy amount of songs and styles of music and everything. i already have a 400 gig hard drive with usb, so all i need to do is plug it in and its good, and i can bring it back and forth from my house to car to update the songs. a disk with 2500 songs would be equivalent to my ipod i have now, and it wasnt near enough space to hold the music i wanted. also, i will have the cd player with the touchscreen, and it can play dvds and everything all in that little package.

thanks for the input tho, it shows you are trying to help me out, but that i guess just isnt what i want. and if the alpine works how i want it to work then it is what i want. i just dont know if it does.
