would it be possible for you to take pics of the wire part of the install inside the engine bay?
Sure, no problem. It was really simple. At first I could not find the proper plug because it had fallen down behind the PCM. Once I figured out that it was back there it was really easy.
when you ground the pcm fan relay wire the fan comes on. So all you have to do is find that wire and splice into it. Then you run that wire to a switch and ground it. Should be one of the brown wires with white stripes at the back of the pcm.
I just called it a PCM, but by that I mean the cars computer. But if you thought what I said was jazzed up then you probably wont be able to do it on your own.
i just used speaker wire...on the 3.4, all you have to do is put a switchable ground in the circuit. to do this i just used some speaker wire...kept the 2 wires fixed together, ran one side of the wire in the engine bay to a bolt on the fender, the other side to the ground wire for the fan. then went through the firewall and wired the switch up...mounted mine right behind the shifter, by that little thing that tells you "apply brake..." yada yada...
what i used:
single throw switch - $1.29 radioshack
speaker wire - already had
and used an icepick and steak knife to ream out a hole for the switch...took about half an hour :D
unbolt the PCM...move it up and turn it out of the way, and find the grommet behind that in the firewall...you'll need that...
look in that little group of wires going toward to PCM along the passenger fender and find the green wire labeled "J". This is the ground wire for the fan motor. you know how speaker wire is 2 wires held together? well take an end of the speaker wire and seperate the individual wires a bit. one of these leads should tap into that green wire. the other should go to a bolt on the fender...anywhere where you can get it in contact with metal will suffice.
once you've got the wires connected (soldering is best), take the other end of the speaker wire and run it throught that grommet. it will take some playing with, but it will go through...you'll need to look up under the dash and find the wire when it comes through, then run it to where you wanna mount it...once ur in the area, split the 2 leads of this end of the speakerwire apart, and strip the wires. the switch you've bought should have just 2 little connectors on the back. simply connect (solder) a wire to each connector. i put electrical tape around the wire right after the switch just for extra support. turn the key to the "run" position, or simply turn the car on, and test the switch. when the cars running, you can tell if the fans come on as intended by watching for a slight "wiggle" in the "amp" guage.
now mount your switch, and you're done!
i dont race much, but it works great in slow moving city traffic, where my car tends to run quite hot...good luck bro!
wow thanks man, that is much more simple than i thought. a few simple Q's however.
does it matter what kind of switch i get?
i thought u had to tap into 2 wires? or was that just for the 3.8?
thanks for the help now all i need is to figure out if my fan motor works =)
yea bro...
as far as the switch goes, i just went in and told the guy i was looking for a single throw toggle switch...i believe the packaging will probably say "SPDT" for Single Pole Dual Throw...meaning theres only 2 positions, on and off. i bought the smallest switch i could find, but if u want u could get an illuminated one, but that requires a power wire for the light.
oh yea...3.4=1 fan wire
3.8=2 fan wires
do this install, turn ur key to on, but dont start the car and flip the switch to "on" (my switch has it printed very small on the back of the switch which position is which)...make sure to scrape a spot of paint off around the ground bolt hole so the ground wire can get a good connection, and if it doesnt work when you test, just try switching the wires on the switch...if that doesnt work, then chances are your fan isnt working
i was takin a look at my pcm. where exactly do you find the wire labelled J. I couldn't see a J anywhere. btw don't we have to run a wire to a 12v source?? aren't we missing a wire here?
Haven’t done anything on the Camaro, but put LEDs on my truck headlights . And my oil pressure sensor went out on the truck so going to fix that this...
