Ok guys... I'm new to installing remote starts though I've done around ten alarms. I'm trying to keep the factory alarm that came with this vehicle (2000 Firebird) and add on a remote start system (ULTRA START U1155). I have done alot of reading and I have come to the understanding that this a a VATS vehicle. So when installing this add on RS, can I just use a resistor? And if so someone give me an idea of where the resistor would go. Also, I know I will be using the door unlock (passenger side) as a trigger, so I can hit the remote unlock button twice and the RS system will engage. (I know this signal is a positive and so I will use a relay to make it negative). I guess my main question right now is if I can use the resistor or if I should splurge for the bypass module. (money is an issue).

Also, if anyone has done this before, can you give me a heads up on anything else I should be aware of beside just the standard wiring?

    Thanks
    Kyle

I've never done a remote start in a VATS car. The VATS chip inside the key is indeed just a resister. The exact values are listed in the FAQ thread in this forum. And your passenger door unlock idea should work fine.

I don't know a whole ton about remote start systems and such but.. You said you're keeping the factory alarm so I'm assuming you're still using the original door lock remote. The only issue that I see with this is that it has a horrible range. Just something to think about if you haven't already.

Just did a remote start today. (not a camaro) The instruction book has a walkthrough for bypassing the VATS system. This did had a chip in the key, but it wasn't "VATS". The customer had to purchase and immobilizer bypass module and we had to put one of her spare keys inside it. She will no longer have access to that key. Just a note for ya. Check the owners manual, then hit up www.the12volt.com for more help.
