  • HID conversion question for a 98 firebird.

    Hi all,

I was thinking about doing an HID conversion on a 98 firebird, read through the threads here and contacted eurolamps.com.

The reply I got kinda seemed kinda confusing, doesn't seem right to me. It said...

Please visit the following link for a quick video of how our RealHID systems look and install: http://s266.photobucket.com/albums/i...t=MOV03148.flv (note this video shows our 4351 kit which is similar to 4703/4701)
Will that work on our cars? I'm *really* confused at this point, as that just doesn't seem right.

    TIA for any comments!

That's about as basic as it gets. I'm not sure I get where you're confused.

An HID kit like that is literally plug and play, and no harder than replacing a light bulb.

Are you getting the entire kit with the new housing, or just the HID kit with the bulbs?

Basically you put the HID bulb into the housing just like you would a normal headlight, but instead of plugging the car's harness directly into the bulb, you plug the bulb into the HID ballast, which then plugs in to the car's harness.

      Well,

Where I'm getting a little confused is with my 98 firebird, IIRC, the sealed enclosure plugs into a mounted backplate in the headlight assembly right? So I need to pull the whole thing and install the sealed beam conversion is what I was thinking? I'd also need wiring rewired to connect to that ballast since there's not a harness that plugs directly into the bulb?

There is a plug that plugs into the back of the headlight on the Firebird.

If you don't want to call it a bulb, call it a sealed housing. There is a harness on the car that plugs into the sealed housing on the firebird. You plug that into the HID ballast, which then plugs into the HID bulb that goes inside the new housing.

You're right that it's illegal, but not because it "doesn't have optics." Optics are what is inside the housing or on the lens that creates directional light. A housing with no optics would basically be a flood light.

Really, the only housings approved for use with HID are currently projectors. But I believe there are a couple free form housings that are being put on new cars that actually acquired certification for HID.

They basically just need a precise cutoff so that they don't blind other drivers.
