  • Losing power on my headunit

So recently, my head unit has been turning off while driving at random. I purchased the headunit back in may, and i naturally assumed it was the head unit going bad. I connected a multimeter to my headunit harness, the ground wire and the ignition wire, and i've noticed that the ignition wire is losing power every now and then. Sometimes turning the key off and on will get it to work... sometimes not. and no, its not the ground thats the problem, i've tested it. Suggestions before i take apart my dash?

do a search for BCM, or body control module. It has a wire that comes loose and can cause the radio, power windows, and power locks to stop working.

Thanks, i'll check that out. My windows are manual and i rarely use my power locks while driving, so that could very well be the problem..

My radio will do that as well. Usually happens when I hit a big bump. The radio will just reset as if I turned it off and back on.

I removed the BCM and did some soldiering as shown on another f-body forum. I'm not sure if that fixed the problem, however, whenever the car is on, i can't lock my doors with the pwoer door locks. The waring buzzer will ring 5 times, but won't lock. The unlock works and when the car is off the lock/unlock works.

The car is not suppose to lock with the keys in the ignition. It's to help prevent you locking your keys in the car.

Power cutting on/off is 99% likely to be a loose connection. Headunit harnesses are famous for this. The two plugs may appear to be locked tightly into place, but a particular male/female pin could be bent/stretched/unseated/etc and not making a solid connection with each other 100% of the time. If you want to insure a perfectly solid and reliable connection, ditch the harnesses and solder the wires together. I see it/deal with it day in, day out.

Then i feel special to be part of the 1% that isn't harness related.

like he said, it won't lock with the keys in the ignition, so you don't lock them in the car. Did you search/find info on the BCM?
