They won't melt the covers. As far as I can tell and have read, HIDs burn at a rate of 35W, which is much lower than 55W of regulars. The wattage (unfortunately I'm a little out of practice) is the measure of the amount of work (current X voltage) to burn the filament, which somehow is proportional to the heat that they emit. The lower wattage should be cooler (though touching probably won't tell that). I know to ignite them, it takes about 20 amps, after that they run on about 3 amps.

yeah steddy is right if you put you hand over the regular light housing you could fry an egg on it but with hid's is a lot cooler
