i know there is many threads about this on ls1tech but their search still sucks, but this is what i found:

"On some GM vehicles, if the wiper return detent gets bent slightly out of shape, the motors will stop in the upright position, not the down position. Happened on my wife's Montana minivan. I bent a little tab in the mechanism using a hammer and chisel, and that fixed it. We're talking less than 1/16" here."

Do not take the column (or "coloum") apart. Take the wiper motor housing apart to find the tab.

happend to me before. there is a tab on your w.w. motor disk that has popped out or got spun around the wrong way.

your best bet? buy a used motor for 30$ on ebay, take off your cowl, and toss in the new one. it's not worth trying to "fix" the problem. i'm speaking from experience.

it will take 2 hours to replace tops.
