Re: Alright, time for some setup ideas...

because you could never run a little spring in WG and add CO2 for precision staged boost control...you can run a manual boost controller and/or just adjust the rod on the wastegate arm and be just fine...but for big power/ small tire cars. like a couple of our shop cars making upwards of 1300rwhp on a 275 or 315 drag radial...you obviously can't come out of the hole on that much power and such a little tire. we run the NLR AMS1000 boost controller in those cars with say; a 6lb wg spring, but can bring the car out the end of the track at 40plus and do it in as many stages as we see fit...

i just like the new style stuff...why take 5 bolts off to remove a down pipe when you can do it with one v-band clamp....
its personal pref when it comes down to it...my boss used an internally gated 62-1 on his drag race honda over 10 years ago and it worked just fine...turbo tech just like everything else has come so far since then.. back then all you had to tune with was an afc or crane interceptor lol....definitely no hptuners or stand alone ems's

anything from precision turbo or garret is definitely quality...and just how you like the buick housings and flange's...i'm a t4 guy myself..i can put anywhere to from as small as a 30R all the way up to i believe they have flanged a 91mm in a t4 housing now...
    to each their own:cool:

      we made 591rwhp on a 4cyl mr2 on e85 with a 3082R
and yeah.. its insanely quick spoolup on a 4cyl..non nitrous dsm guys are going faster on the 3082R then the 3582r just due to the superb low end...

but we however have the advantage of two more cylinders feeding the 35R which is why i suggested it to ssms in a .63 housing to still keep the spool time down...not many people can max this turbo...not in the 3800 v6 world...and before anyone says it...i'm also considering the reliability factor as well..;)

1320smokeshow , even the dealer said the 35R with a .63 A/R would be great for the the 3.8 just to 6000 RPMS though anything past that said to swich to a .82 wheel.

I'm on a budget... as most on this board are. I run a manual boost controller right now. It's not as precise as a good electronic one but I can't afford that.
I can tune for 1-2lb variation in boost through a pass.

When you have a huge turbo in your example 1300hp range you'd need a big way to Keep the boost regulated. I agree.

I'd like to build a Stage2 engine for my car in the next couple years so I can run more power with keeping it reliable.
Here's how it was at Hot Rod's "Drag Week" this summer.

they rate their turbo's low..we stopped on the mr2 because of a weak block design..not because of turbo or injector...while you might not keep seeing the huge climb past 6000rpms...the 3800 series design would be more of the fault then the turbo...
we're gonna push this new engine a lot higher then the last one's..we're gonna be data logging a coolant pressure sensor to watch for any dancing heads. that truly is my only concern..you should see the stockpile of parts we have for this new build...:)

I hate electronic boost controllers such as the greddy profecs and such...i'll either run a aem boost control solenoid or an nlr ams500 or 1000. if its not one of those. its getting a hallman manual...

i agree on the budget...just would hate to have to switch turbo's, manifolds, and wastegates in the event that i some day added a nice electronic to it..

I think you got me beat with 1600 injectors, mine are 60lb injectors for 12-15 PSI Max for track I think they'll be good enough with the methanol injection, but I'm shifting max of 5900-6000 RPMS so the .63 A/R is perfect. I still have a pretty good list of parts and growing, L26 engine(soon) with my extra parts to make it a Built L36 when done, Performbuilt II tranny(JAN.) and a 9" with 3.50 gears(March).

So with this setup, what kind of fuel millage can I pull off? With 65lb injectors and all, wouldn't it kinda defeat the purpose?

I was also wondering, just for curiosities sake, whats your oppinion as to why the turbo V6 is a better option to go than a LSX swap? I know a Turbo V6 should beable to stomp a stock LSX, but when the LSX starts putting money into heads / cam, it might turn into a different story, not that I mind because for right now my HP limit is at 400 - dont need much more than that. -- I suppose 500 HP would be awsome but bang for the buck 400 is top notch.

To answer some of that Need4Camaro, you only install larger injectors to account for the larger capacity when needed. They must be tuned. I put 42.5 injectors into my car for my turbo setup and I swear, after the tuning, it gets better mpg than my other basically stock camaro. That is, if I stay out of boost and drive nice.

because anybody and their mother can put in a ls based engine and make 500hp. we do it because its different and a challenge.. if all i cared about was going as fast as possible i'd have a 370ci sbc and a 91mm precision pro mod turbo with some monster tires and a power glide... run in the low 8's all day as long as the track would hold it. but i know of at least 100 cars that have the same round about setup..what fun would that be?

I like it because I can go get a newer 3.8 L26 engine with 1200 miles for $400 and a tranny for $400 , alot less than a LS1 engine/ tranny can't find a combo at the salvage yards for less than $2500 at most of them. So just the price in motors and how stout the 3.8's hold up is another great feature. Also to say this is the orginal car I bought and is pushing out 400 WRHP which is almost 500 HP at the crank is outstanding.

Thats a good point. I do want the Turbo setup for a good show car. I'm still deciding on what Im going to do first, build the motor or turbo setup and run low boost until I get the motor

Curious, what is the advantage of purchasing an L26 over buying the parts necessary to rebuild your motor if necessary? You're running forged internals too btw arn't you? You likely wont need a rebuild anytime within the near future I would assume right?

                          ---

Just random stuff coming out of my head as I have some spare time to **** around with...

I was going to run my stock Y87 muffler and have it honed out to 2.75" - 3" IF POSSIBLE but I dont know if it is. Reason being is I really love the way my car sounds right now and don't want the raspy throatless tone on the top end of my V6... Btw will the increased airflow of my Turbo make it louder?

So far the most votes are for building the Turbo System first and then rebuilding the motor later right? I am just crossing 101K miles.

If I do the rebuild now I will probably have to put the turbo off for another year, but if I do the turbo now then the rebuild has to wait a year.

The rebuild will be Forged 8.5:1 Pistons, Coated L32 Rods, Double Roller Timing Chain, P&P Match Lower Intake and ZZP Heads (probably sticking with Iron), P&P upper intake, Turbo Grind Cam, Hardened Pushrods, Throttle Body, Electric Water pump... - POSSIBLY a larger turbo and a 3000 stall but not sure - If I can get 450 RWHP out of the turbo with the above supporting mods, I'm doing that.

Other things I'm going to add... Trans Cooler, Oil Cooler, Electronic Boost Controller.

I wanted a L26 becuase it already has L32 rods and the heads the intake side is bigger stock form so it already flows better. I want to use the JE pistons so I will have a 10:1 compression with the milled heads, with 10-12 PSI it should be great. Just to give me something to do this next year, keep me busy. I my currrent engine is 9:8.1 Compression with Diamond pistons I ordered a engine stand already so I'll buy the $400 engine and then buy the JE pistons, ? cam and clev.77 bearings. I have everything else to beef it up more. Then need to order my Performbuilt II tranny.

Sounds cool - Sounds like a cheaper route to take too. I was wondering though, isn't the 10:1 compression alittle on the high end for a turbo setup?

With the $400 motor option, $600 for pistons, $350 for turbo grind cam, 125lb Valve Springs $155, Pushrods $100, Timing Chain $220...

Equating to about $1,805 in parts... ...would I be able to support 500 HP in the motor alone?

More compression less boost, thats why the 10-12 PSI, the JE pistons are 9:9.1 about $1000 , $330 cam, clev.77 bearings $300, $400 L26 engine and then already have 130lb springs,W/ modded retainers, P/P heads milled .010 Viton seals, Comp .105 pushrods, MLS .062 head gaskets, ARP head studs, JP Double roller timing chain, so just need the pistons, cam, bearings and motor. So my total that I don't have is about $2100 with tax/shipping. OR if something goes wrong with the engine before I get the other I might just refresh my current one, but I would like a 08' block/crank with 1200 miles instead of my 96' with 167,000.LOL Will see what goes out first on mine engine or tranny?LOL About same price for either one to get done.
