Alright so I found a guy near me who does all custom piping. He said he charges 60 a bend. So I figure 7 bends, run about 420 or so for just the piping, with no intercooler. And I don't think that a IC is necessary with a rear mount since there's not. Alot of heat. Has any one else ever done this setup? If so what kind of gains did it show?

Re: Rear mount turbo
i got a firend with the set up and its awsome he still used a ic cause the cooler the air the better but he runs 13 psi and he hauls *** in his 3.8 and thats alot for just forward running piping my buddy put his entire set up on for under a grand. plus for the first couple of weeks we had to call in a lot of favors to get stuff right so make sure u got sum extra cash or good friends, as for the piping u dont have a midas or sum tin itd be like 300 from them and prob be just as nice (yes midas does custom stuff)

Re: Rear mount turbo
60 bucks a bend isnt bad, FFH would be like 420 or more by themselves. Ive seen work from places like midas, and ive seen this guys work. And he completley and utterly craps on them. He mostly uses 3 in piping with a minimal amount of welds in chrome, stainless, and ceramic. His work is clean and its really gnarly looking. And do you guys even know if its safe to do it without the IC?

Re: Rear mount turbo
FFH is alright for pipping and stuff but all the heat is under the hood, but if your in a cold area that would be fine but in hot areas under the K or even rear mount setups would be ideal way to go. I would of spent just $4000 with a GT35R turbo on my oval under the K member setup. So thats why I went ahead and did it myself under the tub. K with oval piping. Plus less heat in the engine bay from the pipes. But now with all my extras I think my whole kit is around $4500-$5000 with the AEM boost controller and Aueroforce scan gauge and EGT kit and GT35R turbo and methanol rear mount progressive controller setup. So I think my kit came out well for what I put into it, and will still have extra parts to sell when I'm done. Good luck on the rear mount setup.Last edited by ssms5411; 11-20-2009, 03:40 AM.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake

Re: Rear mount turbo
well here its weird, the winters are cold and the summers get hot as balls. Im either gunna go with the under k or the rear mount (sts). just depends on whether i want it IC or not. either way ill be paying around the same price. But im def. not goin with the FFH route, especially since i already got my pacesetters. But ill go with a t3/t4 or a t70, at about 8lbs.

Re: Rear mount turbo
I would go with a T3 and smaller turbo so you don't have the lag, thats why I went with a GT35R with a .63 A/R and 3" V band down pipe , it will spool like crazy to 6000 RPMS but is limited to 500 HP. Theres like a T67 or 61 I think that would be better. Like the dealer told me I can always swap to a .82 A/R for $300 if I want more power up top which can max the GT35R at 600HP. There was a new Civic they were putting togehter when I was there , was using the same GT35R with a .82 A/R becuase they shift at 8000-9000 RPMS thats why they went with the .82 A/R and then he explained alot about turbos and maps to me and showing me things about the GT35R on the New Civic they were building up. He has a Blue 08' EVO 8 I think it was with 800 HP running 10's and 9's with nitrous said he didn't want anymore out of it becuase it was a DD for him.LOL I forget what turbo he was running , it was a GT series though. Good luck with yours.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake

Re: Rear mount turbo
wow thats pretty crazy for a daily driver hahah. Way overkilling it. But yea i still need to decide which mount im gunna go with. but the rear mount sount pretty sexy to me. And yea your probably right as to going with a smaller turbo for the spool time. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Rear mount turbo
I have a rear mount on my ls1 conversion. It went 130 mph in the quarter, on all-season street tires, a couple of weeks ago. So a rear mount setup can be made to work ok. :)
If you're going to run more than 5-6 psi I'd go ahead and plan on the intercooler anyway. Mine will spike as high as 130 degrees at the end of a long pull, even with a big intercooler, on 10 psi of boost.\'98 A4 Camaro v6->v8 conversion, and STS kit next
v6: 13.6 Powerdyne, 13.2 150 shot, 13.8 120 shot, 14.3 85 shot, 15.7 stock
v8(na): 12.18@113, 392rwhp
Moderator on www.mtfba.org and www.frrax.com (Road Race & Autocross)
Car pics, TN Region SCCA

Re: Rear mount turbo
John, good to see you are still around.
CMBoyd was the first one among us to this set up for his bird. I forgot what issues he ran into, but it's pretty much straight forward and a sweet set up without the use of an intercooler.
But yeah, if you plan on going beyond 9psi you better look into intercoolers.
I was looking at STS set ups the other day and someone from there used just Methonol shots as an intercooler and did fine.

Re: Rear mount turbo
No just look on ebay they sell a kit with all kinds of bends, hoses and T-clamps for like $90, and I think they sell intercoolers.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake
