setting up a turbo

Hey guys im new to this site and I have been browsing around for a while. I love your rides! Anyways, I am going to set up a turbo on my 2000 3.8 camaro.(with help of course) We are going to make it by buying the parts seperate. My girlfriend's dad set up his for only 600, and it's pretty nice! I want to know what I need to run 8 psi. Like how big of a turbo do I need? what kind of injectors? Fuel pump? Do I need forged pistons/crank? A new radiator? Anything else im missing? I want this to be a daily driver and I will not race much but I do like knowing I have the power :):naughty:

To the OP, welcome man. You'll be lucky to find a turbo that's decent enough to be a DD and get you your 8psi for under 600 bucks. I'm not positive but I think 8 psi is pushing it on stock injectors. And you definitely have to upgrade your fuel pump. Not to mention you'll need a wideband if you tune it yourself. Then tuning software. Then there's the wastegate and blow off valve that you absolutely must have. An intercooler seems to be optional but I'm pretty sure anyone would highly recommend one. Maybe you can find some deals on used parts but remember, you usually get what you pay for. A rough guess if done properly and you do all the work yourself.. $1400+ And I still feel like that's on the low side.

Thanks Bigairborder! Yeah I was reading that and it does have a lot of good info. That will work! Oh and Blizzard I love your camaro, have any more pics on it? I would love to make mine to look like yours haha. Yeah my gf stepdad was telling me I would need a better fuel pump and bigger injectors. I have 4k to work with. I was going to swap a LT1 in it but I wanted to be unique, so he said let's do a turbo. Also said my fuel mileage will be a tad bit better just cruising. Any thoughts? Thanks guys

Oh, just wanted to ask this as well. I am changing my transmission too, what can I add to it to make it stronger? not really performance perspective just more on longevity.

It is an auto. I need it replaced anyways because of the slipping.

Theres plenty of mods to do to the auto, if I'm not mistaken, the auto also holds up better than the manual.

The auto is alot better for power, add a Transgo shift kit , vette Servo and get HP tuners(which you'll need anyway and a wideband) , delete TQ mangament and some other stuff and your good to go. Also a UMI tunnel mount TQ arm is outstanding for planting the power down and taking the stress off the rear of the tranny.

LOL, I almost thought the same thing, the 400 HP monster. Can't wait for the 600 HP fondlemonster. LOL HaHa. Thsoe were the times.

What is TQ management? Also a wideband would be good to be safe? Do I really need a UMI tunnel mount and torque arm? Sorry for the noob questions.:o

4k to work with? You're going to have a really nice setup by the time you're done. And then some left over.

TQ-Torque Management.. It just limits the power your car puts out. An easy fix with HP tuners. A wide band is absolutely necessary if you are tuning it yourself. No, you don't need a new torque arm. I don't have one and my traction is still fine.

I'm not sure as to what to go with. I am still doing my research on this, and trying to see what I need as to build it for my camaro. I want to know the best and safest things I can do for it. Such as plugging the PCV valve and using a oil breather etc.
