  • Turbo out of a cummins?

So I am able to get a turbo off of a 24 valve cummins, the motor is just sitting on a trailer in my neighbors shop and he said I could have it. Im sure its going to need a rebuild but my question is would it be a good turbo for my car? Since I dont know as much about turbos as some of you gurus lol. Thanks in advance guyss.

Cummins use the Holset turbos, right? Try to find out what the model of turbo is, either by using a serial number or by what truck it came off of. Depending on its size, you might be able to use it.

I've got a friend running 7psi with a Holset (can't remember which one) on his little 2.8L inline six Datsun and sees full boost by 3600 rpms. Granted, size in this situation does count.

Most desiel trucks use smaller turbos like GT35's or if watercooled GT35R's thats bacause Desiels don't rev. high maybe 3500-4000 Rpms, So thats why they use smaller turbos with smaller wheels like .63 A/R's to get the boost faster for their hauling. Holset turbos are suppose to be great turbos but if I recall they are alot bigger in size , so they are hardly seen on cars for performance. Since you can get a GT35 which is alot smaller and put out the same or more in the performance area. My brother in-law swapped his turbo out in his Ford F-350 desiel and went with a Garrett GT35 non water coooled with a .63 A/R he shifted at 4000 RPMS I believe even with his 5" exhaust and his power programer Bully dog or what ever he had. But the Holset turbo wouldn't be pratical in a car. From what I read before, Could be wrong though just going by what other people were talking about.

Thats where I probably read up on it, when I searched for the GT35R's , the honda's where saying it was cheaper to buy a Holset and there was another to go with also and go that route on a budget turbo build.

Most the imports do rev. 7000-9000 rpms so their A/R's are .82 or higher, when I boght my turbo I saw a new civic that they installed a GT35R on but it had a .82 A/R instead of my .63 A/R because I sift at 6000 rpms or below. But their boost won't kick in until like 4000 RPMS where mine should be about 2000 RPMS and 2800 rpms max boost, with the cam, lower A/R and gears I'm running.
