150k Miles - Forced Induction?

  • 150k Miles - Forced Induction?

    I'm at 145k Miles right now and am currently ordering myself a Racetronix Fuel Pump preparing for my setup which will probably occur the end of this winter... I'm aiming for 300 RWHP currently - My Z28 probably had about 280ish at the wheels so I will enjoy 300... Later on 350 - 375 RWHP but I'm not really looking to get into 500 - 600 FLYWHEEL HP... I just want a fast and fun sporty Firebird.

    As stated several times before it will either be an LSX swap or a S/C or Turbo Setup.

    My main concern is my mileage and reliability of the engine. I know a good tune is key to reliability in any turbo setup - and right now my engine runs fine aside from needing a water pump (which is also being replaced currently).

    But I can't afford to eat an engine whatsoever, its absolutely not an option.

    I want a permanent hassle free setup basically with no having to work on it constantly and I know quite a few people have achieved that, but is it safe at 150k miles?

    Will it be driven hard?... I currently drive my car hard because its typically necessary to keep up with traffic with the average car putting out 250 ponies... I dont think it will always see WOT at 300WHP...

    What would it take to make a Procharger work for our cars and how much do you think it would cost to have the mounting brackets fabbed?

    What kind of PSI would I need to make 300 RWHP on either the Turbo or Procharger? Im guessing 8 - 10 PSI?

    This is going to depend on your individual car. It's history, tolerances, traits, etc. are going to be different from any other 3.8. If you're looking to put down bigger numbers at some time, you might want to look into rebuilding.

    If you can't risk it, don't chance it. Hate to be a pessimist, but you have to look at it that way sometimes. Try to look at it from an objective point of view, and not a subjective point of view. It can help to clear up a few decisions.

    You're going to be hard-pressed to find an FI or swap approach that is hassle free. Your best bet is going to be with a complete bolt on kit, and even with that you'll probably have some initial bugs to work out.

    It's been done before. There was a kit on the market a few years ago that utilized the lower trim Procharger. Good luck finding one. Pathogen had a dual-belt setup like a GTP for her Procharger, but also had a custom bracket and AC delete. But once again, it's not going to be a simple hassle-free approach.

    Depends on the size turbo or trim supercharger you go with. Also depends on the tune used with it.

      but if i was worried about loosing the motor it wouldn't even be at the track and never on nitrous.

        Yeah, if you cant afford it dont risk it, with a build like that its a 50/50 chance, things can go wrong. If you really want to do it, get a rebuild kit for the motor, replace what your feel you need to.

          I would suggest to get a low mileage L26 engine then turbo charge it

            Normally it's not a good idea to pressurize a motor with that many miles on it.
            But I would rather blow up an old motor than ruin a new or rebuilt one.
            Use the one you have in the car to test and tune everything first then when it's running decent rebuild or replace.;)
