    So I'm considering trying the XB-1A head unit. Do we know if anyone has ever tried this one in our typical powerwrap + slotted pulley powerdyne setup? Can you make decent boost with it? I'm pushing 7PSI out of my powerdyne now, but it really doesn't feel that fast after the first few times driving around. I was hoping to push 12-14psi with the XB-1A. Is it possible or will I just have belt slip and waste $2k?

    My other option would be to sell off the powerdyne I just got and go turbo. But I really do like the simplicity of superchargers.

    I'd looked into this back when I had a kit and the consensus was that even with the slotted pulley and power wrap, the belt would still slip. The xb-1a is gear driven instead of belt driven and will need more than what our "back of the belt" routing offers.

      Has anyone tried to use a cog belt on a 3.8 before?

        @pace2006,

        I know slip is always a problem the way we run our units. Has anyone actually ran the XB-1A? I'm curious if it's been done before and what the results were, because so far I've only found people discussing it and theorizing that it's going to slip.

        @techsan23,

        You would have to convert all the pulleys to cog driven unless you're picturing something else.

          I haven't heard of anyone on the forums running one, doesn't mean offline someone hasn't

            No one has posted up results from attempting to use an xb1a specifically, but a former member tried using a similarly designed unit (can't remember if it was Vortech or Procharger) and was only able to get up to 2 psi at best.

              pace2006,

              Do you remember the post? I'm curious how it was setup. I may just go turbo if it's impossible.

                It was one of the setups Stefan tried out a long time ago. Another member told me about it when I was looking at an xb1a setup a couple years ago. You should be able to find it in the archives or searching through the early (2001-2003) threads.

                  I think the gear drive will be to much for even a grooved pulley, you could try it though but it would be some cash to get the new head unit.

                    It would be dedicated to the blower. I've only seen them on the Procharger's, and I think you can run them on a Vortech. My guess is that you would run into troubles finding a cog crank/balancer pulley that would work on the 3.8.
                    There's alot of cog kits for mustangs and LS based engines though.

                      Hmm... so i should just ditch the PD and go turbo? Could also run some n2o, but seems sort of lame. I got a quote for $5k from FFF for their kit with a T70 and $8.2k (installed) from Secret Services for:

                      -SSA Custom 304L Stainless Turbo Manifolds - 6 cyl
                      -Precision Billet CEA 6265 Ball Bearing Turbo (rated at 680hp)

                        A nice cam and cleaning up the heads a bit might yield some better results with that Powerdyne. Add a decent sized dry shot of nitrous and you could have a fun car on a smaller budget.

                        Or spend the money on a turbo kit.

                          I agree, you already you got the PD set up and running, add some more supporting mods to make it faster.

                          Those quoted prices is a huge chunk of change, but then again I know you're balling.

                            If you were to machine a cog wheel on the crank (harmonic) balancer ON TOP, and machine a cog wheel for the Powerdyne and atleast extend its drive axle to the blades to line up with the cog wheel on the balancer, then its possible to do it and still use the stock pulleys.
