ok guys, i have no idea on any of this, so i'm asking here
is it possible to turbo a 1999 3.8l? I'm not to sure about if this is possible, how much it will cost if it is possible, the draw backs, etc.
It's possible, and it can be done. With a good custom turbo guy at your side it can be done pretty easily too. I mean, LS1 guys find places to cram TWIN TURBOS and plumbing underneath their cars - we should have no problems either. The only concern is nobody has done it yet, so it would need to be 100% custom .
I have been really considering a customer turbo for my 98. I found this mechanic that keeps telling me he wants to setup a custom turbo. He is very skilled. He works on BUICK GN's and he has a 10 second Buick Riviera with a 3.8 series 1 turbo motor. He knows lots about engines and lots about turbos. He has done many custom turbo's on other cars. THis is the same guy installing my heads/cam. IF all goes well with the heads/cam install I will contact him for a turbo towards the end of the year.
I have a guy that's confident that he can install twin-turbos on my car also. The turbos he showed me would cost 800 apiece. I don't think that he can do it, even though turbos and rear end gears are his specialty. When I get ready to do some type of forced induction, I'll let him take a look though.

We havent talked prices yet. He was thinking somewhere around $1500. I will be talking to him soon after the head/cam swap for more details on the turbo setup.
If you can find somebody that would do it for 1500, let me know! The shop near me quoted 2000 for the install, and 1500 for reporgramming the computer on the dyno. And this doesnt include the turbo or intercooler!

I have thought about this many times. Correct me if I am wrong but aren't turbo parts universal, B/O valve, boost controller ect... You could use parts from a dsm (eclipse) the parts for the first generation Dsm's are cheap and plentiful. I think the hardest part would be the plumbing and programming. Would it be possible to mount the turbo before the cat and run the piping to the intercooler then the tb.... I'not sure if that would be too much space between the turbo and the intake, it might create a lot of lag, not to mention ground clearance issues. I know I would be pissed if I spent all of that time and smashed the turbo on and evil speedbump!!! Sorry if this makes no sense I'm just kind of rambling on here. Can anyone give an estimation of the max boost levels our internals can handle with the right tuning and fuel sytem????????

It will cost more than 1500 bux custom. The turbo will have to be mounted in front of the engine and equal length piping coming from the exhaust manifolds to the turbo then turn around and run it out on the passanger side. The setup isnt hard its the room in the engine compartment. You will prolly want to have 5k atleast to do this. Cause when they shop starts on it there gonna see that it will take alot of time planing the route of the turbo and the fabricating all the piping. Anyways if you go thro w/ it good luck. Just ask Mike24.We were gone do the turbo setup until we went to 6 differnet shops and they all quoted us between 6-10k all custom w/ out the price of the turbo and intercooler.

This is a freind price. ANd its not a shop. Its just a guy I know. I know turbo's cost alot but this is what he told me. im not to concerned about the details right now but when the time comes I will let everyone see it. Its just gonna be a while. And how do you know this will be more than $1500 bux? you are telling me nothing new. I know the hard work and custom fabricating it takes to put a turbo on our cars. But I know this guy he's a friend and Im sure $1500 would be for parts mostly.
I got a quote from www.racerelated.com for them to do a intercooled turbo running around 7 or 8 psi with internals changed for around 5k. Not to bad but thats a little more then i want to spend. I would rather just sell my car get 7k then use that 5 k and buy a ls1 Wee... Just to give you a thought of prices.
Yes, it is possible. I know Full Potential Shop, Climax Racing, and Area 51 can do custom turbo. I ask how much and not one of them tell me precisely how much. They said it depends on the job. But yeah I might pick this project up in the future. But for now I am happy with my SC. Plus I like the idea of being able to remove it whenever I want to. Also I live in Cali. and you know how it is here when it comes to emission.
Like I said I went 6 differnet shops. Plus Mike24 and i both had about 7k each to play w/. And we wanted to "be the first" like everyone else does and when it comes down to it Its Not Worth The Hastle,Time Or The Money. The only thing the shop was going to do was install and fabricate. We had scaled, orthographic drawings for the whole setup. Also the turbo will be useless down near the cat and wouldnt do a dam thing.A single turbo setup will be a more efficent and power and easier than a twin turbo setup. BTW I along w/ Mike 24 are talking from experience not hear say or reading. So yes I am giving you my input cause I was there and you will find out too.
