hope this isnt a dumb question, but does the forward sweeping setup help with performance? if so, how?

you dont have to make a 180 degree bend in pipes. it'll help the flow of exhaust to the turbo.

so does the forward sweeping setup only work with aftermarket k-members that allow for more room? or does it work fine with the stock k-member?

they are completely custom setups at this point. The one I saw in person was made to work with the stock K-member.

Mine has no problems with the stock K-Member, but I'm also not running any exhaust. The downpipe just goes down to the bottom of the engine bay and all the exhaust empties out there. I had intended on fabbing up exhaust with an oval shaped pipe to fit under the k-member, but then i figured what the hell.. it sounds fine without exhaust.
