  • SC HP #'s vs LS1 swap

Hello to all. i am going to get a little complicated here but i want some honest info and answers. I am planning on either doing a roots type blower from Eaton or Procharger blower set up when ever it is out, vs. LS1 engine swap. Now running some #'s in terms times i want a at least low 12 high 11 sec daily driver. Now i have seen a Eaton style blower on 3.8L Firebird at 7lbs of boost made 307 HP 376FT lbs torque. Now if u go with a engine set up like Stephan ATI V6, at 10-15 lbs of boost u should be able to at least kiss 400 HP. R these #'s reasonable or can u make more power.
Its not a Camaro, Its a FIREBIRD!!!!

Stock LS1's are = to the pretty modified V6. When you say a daily driver.....you need to ask your self what can I live with for a daily driver? Do you want all of youre seats? stereo, spare tire? There is an old saying, nothing beats cubic inches. All things equal, the bigger the better. Do you supercharge or turbo a 6 to get V8 power, or do you drop in a v-8. If we had hondas the answere is simple. As easy as it is to drop in a V-8....... Some poeple think there is glory in doing it with a six, sure there is. Right now the sub 12 mark is impressive for a V-6 F-body. Its average for a lightly moded LS1.
I have made a lot of money in my life, most of which I spent on cars and women.<p>The rest I have blown.

you can have a modded out V6 that will run the same as almost stock LS1. plus an LS1 will sound so much better, and do a little work to it and its gonna be much more then the V6 can ever think of. needless to say i am doing a swap this summer... 383 on juice? yes please :D

I took a nonram air stock LS1 with just a blower and my borla. LT1's are not a problem either. But yeah it feels awesome to be driving a V6 that makes about the same power as a V8. Plus the money you save on insurance, gas, maintainance, registration, you can just invest it on the car. Yeah its true that a modified V6 will never be as fast as an equally modified V8. But I would rather have a fast underdog V6 anytime. Besides, there is only very few of us that modify V6 that makes us unique compare to V8's.

That SC Firebird with eaton, was that the one in Sema?

I dont know what happens in your area but stock LS1's run 13.2's-13.5's and very very few v6ers run this unless they are spraying. I am not trying to be negative but LS1's are real quick machines and it will take some $$$ to beat them. There is a simple equation, however, $$$$=Horsepower.

I think thats great that people like magnus and mighty thor can outrun some LS1's but once you modify them they are in the 12's. If I were you I would go with batmans procharger kit. That will be your best bet for hanging with the LS1's. As for making more power, running 10-15lbs of boost is a lot and a lot of engine work is going to be needed. These 3800's can only handle so much. Good luck though.

with the stuff out there for our engines, we can get around 500-600 hp and maintain some sanity I think. just check out 3800performance and zzperformance and see what they're doin to get out V6's more power

I thought about H/C, supercharger, etc etc for my sexy six banger... but in the end it just didn't add up for me. It'd be at the end of its potential and have potential for more problems.

I just went ahead and got an LS1 and raped myself, money wise. And now I'm modding it out. So I'd definitely say go LS1.. I liked my six banger. .. but Jesus there is such a huge difference.

                  Get a v8 then.
                  It is much easier.

Just sell it and get a LS1. Those things are killer. You'll run high 12's with a few bolt ons. I'm sure you could hit 11's with a few more mods. If you can afford it then do it.

The problem w/ a supercharged v6 f-body is that your options are limited. The powerdyne sc can only efficiently run 6 psi of boost w/out belt slippage. Perhaps when the ATI kit is released higher boost levels will be obtainable. To really lay the smack down on LS1's you will need 9-12 psi of boost.

For comparison purposes, consider my gtp, which contains the 3800 Series II engine w/ the eaton M90 supercharger, which runs slightly under 6psi of boost, and is rated at 240 hp & 280 tq. Most gtp's dyno stock around 205-215 fwhp. LS1's on the other hand stock dyno at or over 300 hp! Without higher boost levels & moderate bolt-ons, a blown v6 f-body will still be out-gunned by a stock LS1.

                      Just food for thought.

Yes, simply due to engine size and rpm limitations you won't see more than 300-320max hp out of a 3.8L n/a no matter what you did.

Going forced induction youre limited to the fuel used and engine strength, and you're only looking at 580-620hp max if you did *everything*.

If you want obscene power, the LS1 or a 383/427 is key... nothing beats displacement.

C'mon guys, the way to say it is "There's no replacement for displacement."

What do you want? And how much money do you have? Those are the only real questions. You can get low 12's / high 11's with either engine.

                          V8
                          1. Newer LS1's with bolt ons have been in the 11's
                          2. V8 sound
                          3. Better aftermarket
                          4. I'd say there is just a greater pool of knowledge about making a V8 fast
                          5. Easier

                          V6
                          1. You already have it in your car...but
                          2. The aftermarket isn't there.
                          3. V6 in 11's is more unique than an LS1 in the 11's.
                          4. ATI P1SC or a nice T3/T4 turbo would enable you to get to the 300 rwhp pretty easily with proper tuning (which is the most important thing). I honestly don't think a forced induction 3800 Series II in the high 11's would be too radical. At least for an A4... get a nice high stall converter (I'll say an Edge w/ 3600 stall to make Only4U happy, haha)... You wouldn't need to get too dumb with the gears...just go as low as 3.42s. With 10lbs of boost, a little money in suspension and tires, mild weight reduction, nice TC, and the proper tuning so that you don't blow up, I think it would be pretty close. Of course I haven't built the computer simulation of this car to see what it runs, but I'd guess mid-low 12's at least, if you could drive it properly.

Only 600HP huh. Dang, that isn't very much at all ;) Enough to hit 11's though.

I would hope that you didn't get a V6 expecting that someday you'd be able to compete with LS1's after installing every trick mod in the book. Talk about your radical ideas, no way. I could see you blowing a hole in your piston first with a high boost SC or some other nonsense before you could even dream about keeping up with a LS1. That's the more likely scenario. Why bother?
