Turbo vs. SuperCharged

alright people, if you want to solve this whole heat thing, here is an equation.
pv=mRT
I'm sure you've all seen it...the educated ones, and I'm sure a lot of you know how to use it.
P: ABSOLUTE pressure (psia)
v: Volume of the air (ft^3)
m: Mass of the air...use 1
R: Universal gas constant
T: Absolute temperature (Rankine...F+460)
or, what goes in, must come out...
PV = PV
T T
V1 = V2, so temp is a function of pressure.
Say slight vacuum at intake and 9 psig boost and 70 degrees:
(30.0)T2=41.0(530)
That would rise the intake temp alone by 194 degrees. That will boil coolent...that is where all the heat comes from. Now think of 20 or 30 psig!?!?!?!?! 90% of the heat comes from compressing the air.
Now the turbo timing. You need to get all the heat that you have added by mashing the gas out, and by not compressing the air you will do so, and by not making so many hot gasses. You have to do this so you don't coke the oil around the bearing on the turbine (exhaust) side of the turbo.
Yes, heat is transferred to the intake from the exhaust, but not a significant amount to cause concern. A turbo is generally around 70-80% efficient as well. Meaning that amount of work goes to compressing the air and the rest into heating it up. But I'm late for classes at my engineering school now. I hope this helped.

Actually, you might be able to do something like that with an external wastegate...Matt<br />2000 Firebird<br /><br /><a href=\"http://www.fullthrottlev6.com/forums/index.php?\" target=\"_blank\">FullThrottleV6.com</a>
