  • RkSport Supercharger

I'm looking to buy a supercharger for my 98 firebird. I have read many of the post on the Forced Induction portion of this message board and it seems most people went with the RkSport Powerdyne supercharger.

Is this a good quality supercharger? Does this kit come with everything needed to run a supercharger? Is it easily installed? How reliable is it? What kind of hp gains would be typical? If anyone could give me any information that could be helpful it would be most appreciated. Thank you all

      nothing comes with 'everything needed.'
      That is rule number one.

Does rksport make a kit for our cars? yes.
Does it come with everything needed? no.

      Is it easy to install...yes/no.

It was real easy for me. some others have trouble.
      i read about it first.

I found it to be very easy to install. I was going to have someone do it and pay like 600$ then I looked under my hood and I was like, **** its only 4 bolts and the relocating of one thing. Thats it.

The SC is good quality and there are internal bearing and belt upgrades you could buy for it. I went 6 years straight with no problem. I had it rebuilt even when there was nothing wrong with it.

I think what others meant was that you have to buy and do several things to it. But the kit itself is complete to be bolted on to your car.

The other things that you need to do is the JohnD wrap (to improve grip), buying a grooved pulley from ASP (to minimize slippage), buying a breather from ZZPerf., buying a 103" Gator or Dayco belt, and doing the TB mod.

Dyno depends on the supporting mods you have. You get guys like Ironman24 who dynoed 312rwhp but his car is highly modified. SSM at over 280rwhp and again he's got engine work done. Another guy awhile back dynoed at 240rwhp at 6 psi. And James Bawkey dynoed at 256rwhp with 8 psi. All of these numbers were done without an intercooler and hitting the limiters.

Remember our stock cars are at 154-158 rwhp for manual and 148-152 rwhp for auto. So a SC is definately a good power adder.

I think there is one Powerdyne SC on sale at the For Sale forum right now that would suit your 98 F-car. If not then just wait around for another one.

I installed mine in an afternoon and Im a GIRL. It wasn't too bad at all. I had to do some trimming on the radiator fan housing, but that was about the only snag I ran into. No big deal there either, just took a little extra time. Be sure to read all of Greyman's stuff on his site, and it will save you a TON of time and headaches. I saw an aluminum driveshaft go for $90 dollars on e-bay today.

I guess i am kinda lazy about getting the car dynoed.

I already had the rockers upgraded before I installed the super charger. the rockers made a difference before...I am sure they do now. the car hauls.

It is faster than most v8 cars I have owned and it is just as fast as my 383 formula s barracuda. my cuda is a fast car. the only thing 'better' about the cuda is it's built tranny...a built 727 crushes our 4l60-e.

you don't have to have aftermarket rockers to get a big bang from the powerdyne. I would keep your tubular manifolds and do a very simple full 3" exhaust catback conversion, though.

What exactly had to be relocated? I'm considering the RK/Powerdyne package.

Just as fast as your Barracuda and faster than your other V8's. Please do tell us about it. What other cars did you have.

I know for a fact that my car is faster than a modified GTA and IROC. I've driven a modified LT1 with intake, exhaust, chip, and tranny done. Mine is still faster.

One guy told me his modified LS1 TA is fast and he said with just one drive I would want a V8. Well I took it out and it felt about the same as my SC V6. Except it is torquer at the low end.

the 3.42 gears in the firebird combined with the modern ignition and the fuel injection being pushed by the supercharger make our 6 cylinder cars real good performers. the 4th gen f body is still kinda heavy but a little lighter than the older muscle cars...just the engine weight alone makes them a little lighter.

If you do pretty much any major mode to the 3.8 i think it pretty much puts you close or better than older 'stock' v8's. (things like Boss mustangs, hemi cuda's, 454's and 'built for racing 10 sec camaros aside)

                              fun stuff.
