What kind of problems are you talking about? If you install it correctly the first time and do monthly checks to ensure everything is sealed up nice and tight you're turbo will last you a long time....
My car is daily driven and the only complaint I have is it sucks alot of fuel, but that is due to my lack of tuning ability. I can't really complain at all. Just change your oil more frequently and pay attension to your gauges and you should be fine.

Turbo is pretty reliable. The only problem is choking and shaft wearing out. People also make the mistake of wrapping the exhaust part of the turbo and the heat builds up from within and causing even more wear and tear.
Truckers can go thousands of miles with turbo and not have problems. But they never immediately shut their truck off when they've come to a stop. This is to prevent choking.
If you do get a turbo, you mustn't shut it down immediately but let your car idle for a minute or two to let the oil circulate down.
ah. i got a buddy with an SI turbo and a GTI turbo and they both are constantly sending their turbo's out to get repaired. They are both aftermarket turbo's. Baught brand new.
i was hanging out with them the other night and they were gett'n on to me about wanting to turbo my car. they're all like "no man get a supercharger, its not worth the trouble the turbo gives you" kinda of talk.

3 things to prevent premature turbo wear: quality of turbo, cryo-treatment, and turbo timer. getting a quality turbo will last longer than a used one or salvaged one. cryo-treating the components will help them stay truer to their original specs over a longer period of time. a turbo timer keeps the oil circulating through the turbo when the engine is turned off. This cools the turbo down and prevents coking of the oil inside the turbo. Oil coking is where it basically burns down into carbon deposits in the turbo, keeping it from getting the oil it needs to stay cool or lubricated, causing it to wear quickly.

Read Maximum Boost to see why that isn't an ideal turbo oil.
What others are saying in here is correct. Turbo timers are total waste of time and money, don't road race the car then immediately shut it off, and use synthetic oil, which IMO, should be required in engines anyway.
The people telling you that it's "not worth the trouble" of getting a turbo, are doing something very wrong. What you decribed about them having to send them out for repairs and what not all the time means they're pushing the turbos way too hard, they have a bad system altogether, they bought from the lowest bidder, or a combination of all. There are Grand Nationals in this world that have 150k+ on the stock turbos, and we can all agree on how "good" technology was back in those days.
