I know blow off valves are pretty much nessicary for turbos. but what makes a bov better than another?

They aren't necessary for Turbos...
They are more of a necessity on manual equipped engines...
..."better than another"...well preference, they more or less do the same thing...as long as you are not using an OE unit!!

BOV's shuld be used in pretty much ALLLLLL FI applications..

turbo or supercharger..

primary reason is to extened the life and reliability of the blower..

A bov is a good idea, it will make your turbo last longer.
To have a stock one is better than nothing.
Alot of the after market ones are just over sized, shiney overly loud or color full.
All that does is says look I have a big bov. Kind of like the guys that have 42mm waste gates on 4cyl cars with small turbos.
I have 2 stock RX7 bov's for my car I picked up over here.
Eather wast $100+ on a new one that won't realy do any thing or get some slightly used ones for $20. So now I have a good bit more money for other stuff.
An over sized color full bov isn't going to give you any more hp, but it will eat up your money.
The biggest bov I have seen is 3'' wide but it isn't used on the equipment that way but it could be modified to be one.

Proof it to me Definitively that a BOV helps an automatic transmission or like you say '...extend the life of the blower'?

Grand Nationals didn't even have a bov stock..
the idea is to spare the compressor from surge, but some argue that the new turbos are tougher then their ancestors and don't really need one. Ill just run one for extra insurance and for reasons listed above ;)

different BOVs are good up to different pressure. some can only go up to 20 and some higher....... if you go above what it can hold you could mess up the diaphram.

For lower boost applications are they still necessary? Like 10 psi or less?

would runnin 10psi w/o a BOV destroy your turbo...probably not but whats the point in decreasing the life of it

anither good reason to have one on 2000+ cars is to save your throttle body..

I have heard of a few vette owners with electric TB's that have had them get messed up.. those little motors were never inteded to have pressure applied to them..

I have a 5 speed so I know it would be a good idea.
My bov's are good to 20 psi, my friend that I got them from was running just about 20 psi on his rx7 for a few days and he blew his B13 apart.
How dose it mess up the turbo, I think it pushes the frount air/oil seal ring on to the thrust bearing and wares it that way.

AllTheGoodNames, that's a good point about the electronic TB's, I'd agree that those are probably kind of fragile. Better to be safe.
