  • Intercooler setup ?

Im new to FI. Thinking about getting the FFF kit after I get settled in grad school. I was talking to a friend who owns WRX. He thinks he knows alot, but really doesn't. He was telling me that there is a difference in top mounted and front mounted intercoolers, Top mounted is perfered for performance. My question is.... Is there a difference between mounts? If s why? And could we top mount it on the camaro and run with a SS hood? The last question I suspect no...not enough clearence. Thanx I rather know this from people who know FI not from people call themselves experts on FI just because the bought a factory installed turbo.

side note....I want to eventualy beat him. And its not the sti version.

Like Tiago's bird, Front mounting for intercooling is way better than mounting in on the top like WRX. In most cases bottom mounting where it picks up air. For one thing it doesn't pick up the heat that will be coming from the engine and headers.

I'm not familiar with WRX design, even though I've seen it. But I think for us it wouldn't work.

The ONLY reason the wrx can get away with this crappy design is because it has an huge scoop lol. I'd prefer a front mounted intercooler were it will get fresh air from outside the engine bay.

I couldn't agree more. In my opinion, a Front Mount Intercooler is the best way to go in 99.99% of all cases. Here's how my IC is mounted on my car

This way would require you to make modifications to the bumper and bumper support, however.

          Think about this, heat rises.

Top mounts aren't that good when compared to front mounts.

Mom has a wrx and it gets sooooo damn hot

I guess if your enging wasn't in frount it would be good.
                  12secondv6 is right, heat rises.
We have a lot of room for a big intercooler up frount and we can put tons of air on it.

Well one of the biggest reasons they end up FMIC is because you can fit a much larger intercooler up front normally then you can ontop of your intake. Not to mention the efficiency gains.
