Since no one replied to 2 of my posts in the "DRIVETRAIN" forum I thought somebody would be cool enough to help me out in this forum,

I'm one of the 10 beta testers for the Procharger kit and wondering what gears I should get in my car and where is the best place to purchase them? Do I need to by the shims, gaskets, etc also? What gears come stock in my car (99 firebird)?
Also, I'm looking for a torque converter too. Where should I get that and what stall speed should I get? I'm just trying to get most of my mods done so I when I get the SC slapped on (when ever that may be) and the computer sent out to get programmed, I can get it done all at once instead of sending it back numerous times and spending more money. Sorry for so many questions trying to get most of this stuff for Xmas.

Thanks

to see what gears are in ur car ur gonna have to look at the RPO codes on the driver side door
they start with GU(X) x is a number

If ur car has lets say 3:42's I would leave it alone, but u may wanna get 3:73 (which none of our cars came with) they may be better.

hope this helps

Sorry nobody got with you in drivetrain on the gears. Some of the information you want, you can find by searching over there. The rpo codes, what they mean, where to find them, etc. Sources for gears and for installation kits and what is in them. And some ideas on usual pricing for having someone do the install. You can do it yourself if you have the tools and the know how, but a lot of people get gear whine from not setting it up just right, and you will get reduced gear life if they're not just right.

When you do post over there, make sure your topic is descriptive. A lot of times I only pick and choose which ones I read, and if I see one that says something like "what do you think about...", I don't even open it. Not that you did that, just a thought... There's a lot of posts in drivetrain and intake/exhaust, too much for me to keep up with.

The s/c will make more torque across the board, it shouldn't make it spike like a cam would. If batman gets a good dyno run after the install, it will help with figuring out gears and t/c, if we can see where the torque curve actually falls. Converter is nice, I'd like one but don't have it yet. Probably around 3000 stall would be my guess for a good all-around one.

There are some basic things you can put on now (if you don't already have them on your list...) Intake mods. Full exhaust, preferably headers. These will take some time and some dollars. You'll need a good exhaust to minimize back pressure problems.

If you are looking at a cam, don't go with the low lobe separation numbers like the na guys are getting (the 112's are too low, they will bleed off some of your boost to the exhaust). Superchargersonline.com and kennebell recommend 117 ls. (which may be too high?)

Gauges. Fuel pressure. Air/fuel, or autotap and a laptop. Gauge pod. Boost gauge. Just the gauges will add up to quite a bit. Fuel pressure is $180+.

3.42 gears are good. Any more than that, you start getting into issues with speed limiters, rpm limiters, shift points and all that. 3.23 you could still get away with. You'll want lsd if you don't have it. 12secondV6 runs 3.23's with nitrous and gets good results with those gears even.

What can the stock 4L60E handle hp wise? What years have the two piece bellhousing?

Thanks for the info. John_D. Do you know a web site that has good price for the gears and a converter? Also would you recommend buying an install kit for the gears?

It's easy, if you got an A4 you got 3:42's.M5 has 3:23's those are the only 2 gears on 98+ cars.I think! if not, someone please correct me.

sorry - incorrect but we all learn in time. If you are auto you have 3.08s unless u had the Y87 package which changes the exhaust, gears and LSD, along with a diff steering ratio. Look at your door and if it says GU4 - u'r SOL and were gifted with 3.08s. GU5 is 3.23, and GU6 is the much favored 3.42s. 5 speeds came with 3.23s correct - but could also have 3.42s.

Don't know about the two-piece

But the stock 4L60E has the same internals (different input shaft & bellhousing) as a v8 and can handle upwards of 400-450 ft/lbs of torque.

Long as you treat the tranny right, it should be fine.

I haven't done either, or researched it. I can tell you what I've heard on here though.

SLP comes up a lot for gears and the install kits. I think jegs, summit, etc have install kits too. A lot of people just let a shop do it, so all they bring to the shop is the gears, and the shop provides the install parts. If you do the install, I'm pretty sure you need the kit, since you won't have spacers and things laying around to use. Go do a search on series 2 and series 3 carriers when doing your planning. There are some issues there if you have a series 2 carrier.

PI and Yank for converters. I think everyone has been dealing direct with PI and Yank.
