  • TURBO Challenge

This is not v6 related, but I thought you guys might know. A friend of mine has a 79 camaro with an american speed 383, that dynoed 432hp at the fly wheel. He wants twin turbos, and I was thinking that twin garrett T04s, might do the trick. The compression, is close to 9.5:1, and the engine has forged rods, pistons, crank, and splayed 4 bolt main caps, so it could handle it. This is purely a race car. Also what do you think it would be capable of as far as HP, and how difficult would it be to put together? Thanks.

The cost is too much. Plus so far we have done pretty good tunnig the holley 750 double pumper.
      Would those turbos work well?

I would go for twin T3's .63 A/R out of the late 80's model manual TBirds.

My friend and I are twinturboing his 69 Mustang Coupe, he has almost everything he needs to begin.

Those damn older cars have a LOOOOT more engine bay room then us.

I second the T3 recomendation, two T4's might be too large. But it all matter what his engine specs are and how much air he is flowing.

For a 383, go with T04's. Sounds like his engine can handle them.

When going twin, smaller is nicer, quicker spool, and double the boost. Even though its a 383, T03s will kick some *** ... T04s will take a while to spin on that low RPM motor (I assume its a stump puller?) :D

Get one T3 and one T04. That way the T3 spools up right away and makes power down low and the T04 takes over on the top end. ;)

doesn't work like that on a simple twin setup, hes not doing a sequential.......

Thanks for all the replies. Yeah it is a stump puller, it made over 400ftlbs from around 2200rpm till around 5800rpm, and 500ftlbs peak at around 3600. The idea of going with the turbos, is to get more top end. that is why I was thinking t04s would work. he needs no more low end grunt, He has traction bars, and slicks, and he can roach them off the line, and bark tham going into second. As far a exhaust flow, with dual 2.5in pipes the velocity at either tailpipe pushes back on your hand, at idle. The reason this engine makes the power it does, in my opinion because of the heads, it has a very expensive set of aluminum heads. It flows A LOT of air. trust me.
