  • What should I do to the engine in preparation...

    What should I do to my engine to prepare it for my turbo? What I actually mean is, what should I do to the engine to allow more boost after the turbo goes on? Until I get any engine work done, I dont plan on running any higher than 9 psi (water-air intercooled).

    Do you think I would have any problems running 9 psi on my 70,000 mile engine? Is there anything I should think about replacing?

    Im gathering parts now, and should be ready to do everything the first week after I get off of college- I have the turbo, intercooler, and wastegate, but I still need the fuel comp, injectors, and blow off valve.

    umm, forged pistons and rods are a must. lower compression will help allow more boost 2 be run. heads/cam will allow it to breathe better and get more air in and out of each cylinder. ignition upgrades will help make sure all the air/fuel charge gets burned. ARP bolts will help hold everything together. upgraded gaskets will hold boost better and withstand time at higher boost.

      Actually your stock engine, assuming it is in good shape, can handle 9 psi intercooled, just fine.

      Just make sure you do a good job putting it in, monitor boost, etc.

      If you do have to rebuild, might as well build it for a turbo, however. Lower compression, new cam, turn up the boost.

        What he said.

        The first mistake you can do when it comes to an engine with forced induction is run out and get forged parts. They can be pricey and not needed.

        With 9 psi, just make sure you have a scan tool so you can monitor your engine. Play around with it and find your engines weak points from that. Also, a MAFT+ would be nice.

        If you decide 9lbs is too much or you want to up the boost a little, lower compression pistons should be your answer. That will give you a lot more playing room. :D

        Thats about all I can think of for now.

          Thanks guys!

          Now that christmas break is over, I have to go back to another 5 months of gathering parts and doing nothing to my car :(

          Oh well, I guess the turbo will be worth the wait!

            advice:

            Before you go out & buy parts, find out what your getting yourself into. Talk to some people who have actually done it. Its not a walk in the park by any means.

            Do not expect it to be cheap either. I would plan on spending a good 3k for a good setup. Personally, I think I would rather go with Batman's ati kit myself. Lots of advantages -- like a self-contained supercharger (in respect to oil).
