I have a vortech FMU with no directions, can someone tell me which fitting on the fmu is the inlet, and which is the outlet?
The FMU goes on the smaller fuel line right?
And where is the best place to pick up a high volume fuel pump?
Thanks.
Turbocharged and intercooled.
17psi(oops), stock fuel pump, no FMU
http://www.cardomain.com/id/phoenix64
Video: ftp://ftp.pfabrication.com Assorted car ****: TurboCamaroFull.
I thought the inlet would be in the middle, and the outlet on the side. But when I hooked it up that way, I got instant 80 psi fuel pressure with any amount of boost.
When I switched it around, the fuel pressure would ramp up with the boost pressure. So inlet on the side, outlet in the center.
It does go on the smaller line, which is the return line.
I'm not sure on the fuel pump. (it's an inline?) Seems like people say to put them near the tank, but I can't back that up with any reasoning or links or anything. It's just seems like that's what I've heard.
 the vortech unit is adjsutable..
The only FMU vortec makes that is adjustable is the "super FMU", and it costs 307$ from vortec. Every other one they offer has a fixed ratio, ranging from 4:1 to 12:1, and these cost 155$ from vortec. the non-adjustable ones can be recalibrated with different ratios, and the kits are 31$ each, and the entire FMU must be dissassembled to do so. a procharger FMU adjusts with a knob on the front, so the regular vortec ones dont hardly qualify as "adjustable". So being as how he probably doesnt have a "SUPER FMU".... he otherwise has a non-adjustable unit...
you can get the various plates for the standard fmu's strait form vortech.. they are cheeep.. they dont have a pretty little screws screw like the others.. but how often do you need to switch the disks??
Actually he's not wrong. The Procharger he's referencing is considered to be a full adjustable unit. Why would you want one of those? Two words: Fine Tune. Can't do that with a fixed ratio unit, even if you can buy different plates.
Sure you might not need to change the plates in a Vortec after you get it tuned.. but what if you change the boost? Even if you decrease the boost, you'd need a new plate at that point to maintain optimal A/F ratios. Sure people change the boost all time with a fixed ratio and see good performance, but it's not the best performance they can see out of it. For an extra $50, the Procharger is the best option, hands down, and you don't have to worry about any plates.

dude.. again.. not talking about the procharger one.. IN FACT I was working on one today on a procharged lt1 a buddy of mine and i just finished building.. they are nice units.. however.. the vortech is adjsutable that is all i am saying..
that super FMU looks kinda cool though.. ever really looked into that..

did you get banned from the GN board or something?
and about my "comment" it was an attempt at humor.. i found your over use of them in your prior post funny..
1st....so adjustable to you means that the unit has to be dissassembled and rebuilt? that hardly qualifies in my book, especially when a procharger requires only the twist of a knob with your hand.
2nd.. nope, not banned from any boards
3rd... your comment wouldnt have been taken by anyone as "humor"
its not that hard to replace it and you dont need to rebuild it every time.. its like a few little hex screws.. like 6 or 8.. pull off the top cover plate.. then put the new one in.. take 2 seconds.. ok.. more like 3 minutes.. that includes a minute worth of figureing out which hex key to use..
i agree its not as nice as the prochagrger one.. but it works..
I dont plan on keeping the standard Vortech FMU.. heck, the only reason i have those plates is because riles gave tehm too me when i got his kit..
The plan for now is bigger injectors get them installed.. get to a dyno.. and tune as best I can FMUless.. then add a new FMU still looking for the one i want.. possibly the super FMU it has the features i need.. and use that for small tweeks..
idealy i would want to run the car without an FMU.. it "can" be done with direct pcm tuning.. however.. it wouldent be quite as safe.. in the case you get a spike somewhere.. because any pcm tune that it run will be relitivly static to the boost levals that the car produced when i tuned it.. becuase our PCM's dont really have the proper paramaters and provisions to do so.. even after i upgrade to a 2bar map sensor.. kinda makes me wish i had a GTP pcm and wireing harness (actualy something i am considering).. but I will still use an FMU to play it safe..
but yeah.. aparently you know my plans better then i do.. so.. next time i will just let you speek for me..
