  • MAF sensor

I've been talking to my "import turbo" buddies and they raised the question about the MAF sensor on my car. Apparently, they're reccomending that I upgrade to a 2 or even possibly a 3 bar MAF sensor. According to them the stock sensor is a 1 bar only reading vaccuum from 14Hg-0, and not reading any possitive psi. Is this true, and if so, have you guys upgraded your MAF sensors? I'm just trying to get everything together so I can do the install all at once. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, a friend of mine has a CarTech adjustable FMU. Anyone ever used this FMU? I was going to go with the Procharger adjustable, but if this one is reputable....I'll use this one. Thanks

Think you mean MAP sensor not MAF.

By the way, clean looking car. I've always liked the roll bars on convertables.

Yea it is the MAP sensor. The MAP sensor for the L36 only does measure vacuum (correct me if i'm wrong). The MAP sensor from a L67 will read up to 3BAR which is beyond the realistic limit of our engine accepting, little over 44psi. I believe this sensor requires your PCM to be reprogramed. This I believed is being worked on by the guys at HP Tuners. This should be able to have the engine run very good without the use of a FMU.

You're right...I meant to say MAP instead of MAF. I had a brain fart. So, HP Tuner is working this issue? Guessing it's not available yet then..? So, has anyone else had a timing problem with the stock MAP sensor? If not, then I'm not really going to worry about it only starting out at 5psi and working my way up as I get money and most of all time to upgrade internals. Now the L67 you speak of...is that a Grand Prix GTP motor? One more question... about the CarTech FMU...anyone heard of it, or using it?

Once again, thanks for all your help on this. Hopefully everything goes well with my install.

Coriya71: thanks for the comment on the car. I've put a lot of hard work into that damn car to make it look good. I recently got some Zaino for my anniversary present from the wife. Haven't used it yet, but I'm anxious to see what it does.

I read in a thread on HP Tuners site written by one of the HP Tuner guys (not sure if it was Keith or not) about the L67 MAP sensor mod. They are working on it, but it's not out yet. They have some more pressing issues at the moment. About the MAP being an issue, it's definately not at the moment, like viper04af said, people have had cars way past the normal 6-10 psi and theres no problems caused by the MAP sensor. Yes, the L67 is the engine from a GTP (and several other cars have them as well). The sensors are physically interchangable, but the computer tuning isn't, thats what HP Tuners is working on. It's not that you have to have this L67 mod for L36 FI applications, but it's icing on the cake to have the computer fully regulate fuel, which is better than a mechanical FMU. The Cartech FMU is a good FMU, it's adjustable making tuning easier and more presice. Many people on this board use it to success, the Vortech Super FMU is also good, but expensive. The normal Vortech FMU is cheaper but doesn't offer the adjustability of the Cartech or Super FMU. Good luck on your project.
