• Crankcase Breather conclusions

Here comes the conversation starter, and excuse me for being in the FI forum.

I need a breather, as I'm going the turbo route. I know to block the TB hole. Select me a cost effective, safe, etc. option for a breather.

1. ZZP Screw in, $27.99 + Shipping ($35)
2. Pep Boys / Advance special ($?)
3. Summit Racing -- give me a part number, I'm struggling on that.
4. Drill a hole in the oil cap, add a small filter.

And, since I might have your attention, which is easier -- feeding oil off of a sandwich adapter or the oil pressure tap? Thanks!
-Rob

Please don't use a sandwich adapter for the feed/return.

It may be good for feed, if you block the return on it and dump it into the pan.

How does that ZZP one works?

Do you remove the oil spout and screw this one on?

I have a hose hooked up from my PCV back into my K&N FIPK to recirculate the blowby. Otherwise, the hole in the oil cap (with a filter) sounds good, but you'll probably have small amounts of oil in your engine compartment as it passes through the filter.

I'd love to see a photo of a good setup including the work done to the throttle body if anyone has them available.

I haven't had any oil come out of this breather:

http://www.southfloridapulleyhq.com/...r_breather.htm

It's a real nice billet piece that screws into the valve cover and then it uses a push in style breather into the adaptor.

I plugged the hole, and vented it to the atmosphere.

Riles, umm, wow! Umm ... wow! That looks like a helluva solution, does it work / vac leak / surge / etc? So you still run the stock PCV and no breater?

I haven't had a problem n/a yet, but everytime I go to install the powerdyne, something else goes wrong (I bought an imcomplete kit and I dont find out what I am missing until I start the install)

...speaking of that, does anybody have their instruction manual for the powerdyne?

There is no vacuum leak, because the hole is only in the pipe that was originally venting in front of the throttle plate (not a vacuum source).

The car runs exactly the same as it did before, which is always a plus!

I can email you Mcaanda's Powerdyne install instructions if you'd like.

Dojo, can you e-mail them for me as well, please? I have them somewhere, but I am lost at the moment.

Riles, so ... the PCV valve (under the two-bolt cover) vents back to the TB, and instead you have plugged the hole and vent it to the atmosphere? Sounds like, umm, a plan that fixes both and no need for a breather. Question -- why drill six holes? And does this mean trusting the PCV valve ($2.37 ball check valve) with the life of a motor or just the chance of a tiny leak. I think I may have found my breather solution. I'm hoping this serves as a nice, landmark thread ...

What do you guys think about an older car, with possible piston ring blowby? Do you think a breather would benefit a car like that? It seems that if it helps equalize crankcase pressure as a result of forced induction blowby, it should help for worn ring blowby. I dunno, just a thought. One of my valve cover gaskets has had a slight leak for a long time anyway. Could that be due to excessive pressure?

Dojo- I would love it if you could do that for me jreilly@nd.edu is my address. Thanks!

Wicked- I chose six holes, because I wanted little holes, and after I put like two in, it didnt seem like it would flow as much as the original 3/8" hole in the tb, so I decided to just drill as many as would fit, and that number turned out to be 6 I really like this solution because it lets everything work exactly the same way as GM designed it, except the hole is in a different spot. I'll trust the millions of dollars of research by GM, so thats why I'm trying to mimick it.

Darknight- I remember reading something about a vacuum pump for cranckcases that sucks out any blowby or positive pressure. I think that would be great for a car with blowby- it seems like it would make more hp too (becaues the pistons arent being resisted by air in the cranckcase). I'm not sure about what it is called, but i think i read it in the advanced forum.
