• d*mn turbo lag

ok guys i got a 3.4l maro. im gonna drop a 3.8l 87 gran national engine in the car. with modifications the camarobuick hybrids run 10's all day http://www.gmhightechperformance.com...eature02.shtml
any way in my reasearch i found that there is a buick to chevy bellhousing converter that'll allow me to bolt on a tremec t56 trans onto the motor. problem is that between shift, the turbo will spool down and will lag. they saisd that it will be extremely slow. how slow will it be with the turbo lag. also i got a recomendation for a ball bering turbo, that isnt suppose to lag at all.

A blow off valve will help prevent the turbo from spinning down when the throttle plates are closed because it vents the boost to the outside preventing the compressor from stalling. Or you could just power shift everytime I don't have any experiance with the ball bearing turbos. Just that their supposed to wear a lot better, less heat from less friction I imagine which may result in quicker spool ups...hope this helps.

how much would the GN engine swap cost? rough estimate. b/c in a year i either want to swap engines or get a loan for a trans-am w/ LS1.

i never knew that the boost controller would help turbos not to spool down. does any one have any idea how much slower id be? and to answer your question the engine with everything you need to drop it in should run you about 2000 if im not mistaken. this dosent include any of the safty devices like roll cages or the suspention or brake work that you'd wanna do. but to have an 12 v6 maro would be awsome. thats all id need, just 12.9999999 and id be happy as a pig in slop. according to my reasearch the only mod that id need to to do to the front end would be the k arms. what ever those do i need them to hold the engine. ohh and if im not mistaken i beleive that the grand nationals need a waste gate to run because they are capable of running more thatn 21psi. and if it goes too high then the wastegate opens to releive the pressure am i correct to beleive this or do i have wastegates all wrong? thanx for you guys quick replys

No one here is likely to be able to tell you what the difference in performance would be with a manual vs. automatic tranny on a turbo Buick engine...you'd be better off asking on http://www.turbobuick.com. I'm sure some of those guys have made the swap.
FWIW, I used to have a 91 Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo with a 5-speed manual, and I didn't notice much drop between shifts.

$2000 is a little low. The engine itself might cost you well over 3500 or even more, plus other stuff that you need. But keep us posted, I'm very interested in this

To answer some q's, yes a ball-bearing turbo does reduce lag and allow you to put on one size larger exhaust housing on your turbo and keep the same spool rate, or keep the exhaust turbine housing the same and spool up about 200-500 rpm sooner. By installing a blow-off valve, you can keep the turbo spinning quickly during upshifts so you don't get a lot of lag when you finish the shift. Keeping the turbo piping to the intercooler and then to the throttle body as short as possibe will aslo help realsize boost a little sooner since the air won't travel as far in shorter piping than longer. Also, keeping the turbo as close to the engine as possibel will also help spool up faster, but don't compromise the headers to het it to fit closer. Just have a custom y-pipe made that is as close to the headers as possible. keep all of your exhaust piping covered in header wrap or have them ceramic coated. less heat=more hp/tq. Lastly, Keep the exhaust backpressure to a minimum. Use as big of piping as you can find for after the turbo for quicker spool up. where a n/a car will be huring with too big a pipe, a turbo'd car will love the biggest pipe you can find.

if you simply got the engine & turbo in good condition for under 2 grand, I would call you very lucky & be very surprised.

I would say be ready to spend AT LEAST 6+ grand.
