  • Intercooler review.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...e=STRK:MEWN:IT

So thats my intercooler. Its mounted infront of the radiator, with the outlets pointing to the passenger side. I know its a bad place to mount it, and it does pick up some heat from the radiator if your just sitting at a stop light and the fans aren't running, no big deal though once you are rolling. Did the install myself, I'll be the first to admit that its a hack job. Made it out of exhaust and radiator hose from napa, total cost 60$. Took about 5 hours to put it together, most of it spent chasing exhaust pipes and clamps, and trying to cut steel with a dremel.

Its picks up about 15* on a run from 30-75. Its not as good as some of the front mounts I've seen that pick up no temp at all, but its one hell of a lot better than the 140+ temp increases I was seeing before.

The instalation of the intercooler allowed me to pick up about 6-8 degrees of timing on the top end, and the boost is more stable, I was getting occasional spikes before.

Huge improvement in power, even when its not under boost, aparently the turbo was a big restricion to have that close to the TB.

As far as increased lag, there is a little bit, but its way more than worth it. And when I let off the compresor doesn't stall once,it does it multiple time, makes an interesting sound, kind of chirping, where as before it sounded like someone sneezing into a tube.

In short to any of you that are considering running more than 6psi without and intercooler, like I was, your nuts.

yes you are nuts to run any boost without some type of cooling imo. Its really worth the money spent to save you the time, money, and hassle of an engine overhaul.

Good job no matter the amount of hack. less timing retard = more good times.

Been looking into the 'between engine and radiator' style of intercooler mounting myself. For the right price it seems like one would make up the cost of the intercooler with better fuel economy from having to retard engine less... not to mention better performance and the engine saving benifits of intercooler as well.

So, you get what you pay for...but still gonna ask....what is the word on the air to air intercoolers that cost about $180 to $250? The ones like this here. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...947056052&rd=1
That one is kinda long...have seen shorter...
Curious, still planning, thought I would jump in on this post.

          Thanks.

A small intercooler like that could still cool the charge some what, but you endup with a high pressure loss. People on this board with powerdynes have lost as much as 3psi of boost after installing an intercooler, thats absolutly rediculious. Thats why I chose the one I did, very low pressure loss. The cooling isn't ideal but I can live with it.

If you want to see a very effective intercooler set up check out Teufels car. Although you probably don't need anything that extravagant for a powerdyne. I beleive you can pick up his intercooler for around 300$ on ebay.

cool, thanks for the info. that is a big pressure drop indeed. I figured on some loss...but maybe smoother in piped and rigged good...but up to 3 psi loss...sheesh.

guess I better refine my 'powerdyne intercooler' board search.

I will definatly ask for input from this board when and if it comes time to setup intercooler.

Actually, that same side port intercooler you got there is the smallest (L) end to end I have seen on ebay yet. I know 28" with ports on either end will not tuck in the engine bay behind radiator but your TREADSTONE Turbo Intercooler might be able to fit in there...maybe tilt the spool up or down to angle the cooler and perhaps gain a little room. There is clearance above the TB..a little bit at least. Hmmm... radiator hoses...hmmm... I think I will make a cardboard template about the size of that treadstone and see how it looks behind the radiator.
I saw the pics of greenglows intercooler rig. he got that to fit. If I remember right it sorta looked like a mini radiator and mounted between the engine and radiator. hmmm. I'll be thinking about this all night at work.

What is the ideal intake air temperature range I should be seeing when I start up my car with the turbo on it? I've got a stock rx-7 intercooler that I am gonna use for now. I'd love to run 10lbs of boost on this if possible. What do you all think? The core is probably 3" thick, 12" long, 7" high?
