  • Intake Air Temps

What intake temperature would you say is the norm/safe running a turbo? I've got pretty much everything I need to put the turbo in, I'm just waiting on a few things and finishing up some other work on the car. I've just been real curious as to what boost I can run with the stock internals. (1997 3.8L in 1994 camaro) I have an rx-7 stock intercooler that I'm going to front mount in the opening where the fog lights are. Its not huge but I figure since its front mounted it'll help a lot. Thanks for any help you guys/gals can offer.

I don't mean to be a downer, but your going to see a pretty signifigant pressure loss with that intercooler, the lower you keep the boost the better IMHO.

As far as intake temp, I've seen as high as 180* at about 14psi of boost W/O an intercooler ambient was 20*. Very bad idea. If you can get the temps down to ambient, that will help a lot with detonation and power.

My car runs best at about 8psi, thats what I would recomend for street use.
    Turbocharged and intercooled.<br />17psi(oops), stock fuel pump, no FMU<br /> <a href=\"http://www.cardomain.com/id/phoenix64\" target=\"_blank\">http://www.cardomain.com/id/phoenix64</a> <br />Video: <a href=\"ftp://ftp.pfabrication.com\" target=\"_blank\">ftp://ftp.pfabrication.com</a> Assorted car ****: TurboCamaroFull.

I'm only using that intercooler because it was free. With all the money I've been spending lately, I don't have extra for a new, larger IC. I def. don't want to run without anything. I'd like to do 10 psi, but I'd be happy with 6 until I get a larger intercooler. Thanks for the feedback...I really appreciate it.

That intercooler does not flow well enough for your application. Ditch it. I dont understand how you can put a substantial amount of money into a turbo system and then get cheap when it comes to such an important item. You do not want to get cheap on this stuff. I say wait until you can afford a good intercooler. For less than 300$ a perfectly suitable intercooler can be had, maybe even less if it was a used one.

Thanks for your input GN, what intake temp is safe to see?
