• 2.8L Super/TurboChargers

Hey there;

I'm a new guy to these forums. I'm James.

My question is about the old style Camaro/Firebird engines. Yup, you know it; the almighty (chuckles) 2.8L MultiPort Fuel Injected V6.

Does anyone know where to find turbochargers or superchargers for these engines? I've been looking around but to no avail. The ones I find most commonly are the 3.8L or 3800 Series II superchargers/turbochargers, but no 2.8L. :(

If anyone knows anything regarding the availability of these parts, please post here, or if you have any tips on perhaps finding them, please post those here too. I really don't want to shell out money for a 3800 Series II just so I can turbocharge the engine.

Thanks a lot.

Are you talking about a OEM supercharger/turbocharger or aftermarket?

Either, although I'm pretty sure that there were no OEM turbo/superchargers made for the 2.8L MPFI.

I can almost be certain that they don't make a turbo and/or supercharger kit for your car. Maybe some shop has fabricated one once or sells one, but not to my knowledge. You can always though, fabricate your own set-up. that maybe your best bet.

And you'd probably have a much easier time than us 4th gen owners since you have a lot more underhood room to play with. But basiclly a custom setup is the only way you can get it done.

Looks like I have no choice but to go with a custom setup then.

Help me out guys, what do I do, where do I start?

First you probably need to figure out which turbo you need based on displacement, where you want to develop power, lag, and airflow produced by the turbo.

From there you can figure out where to mount the turbo and use that to design you're exhaust, intake, and compressed air tubing along with oil and/or water lines and where you want to mount an intercooler.

You also need to determine how much boost you want to run and approximately how much HP it will net you.

I don't know much about the 2.8L engines so I don't know how much boost they can safely run on stock internals. I also can't tell you what you are going to have to do for fuel enrichment(a 12:1 mixture is better for forced induction than 14:1) and ignition system(might need spark retard/double spark capability).

Someone with more 2.8L knowledge will have to help you with that.

Hope that gets you started.

If you have a little money, swapping the 3.8L GN engine can be done with factory parts. You use the same stuff as a TTA. Just an idea if the cost of a custom setup looks high.

What is 2.8L, about 170 cubic inches? If so I have a chart that tells turbo choice characteristics based on displacement. And for 150ci-200ci it calls for a T-3 turbo with about a .7 or so a/r ratio for the turbine housing. Talk to a turbo dealer, they'll know what you're asking. Here is where I'm getting my info: http://www.turboneticsinc.com/guidelines.html
To take care of extra fuel you could probably get by with slightly larger injectors and a rising rate fuel pressure regulator(also known as a FMU) in line in the fuel return line. From what I know the 2.8's are pretty much like a 3.4, except the 3.4's are a stroked 2.8. You should be able to run conservative boost pressures(5-7psi) w/o much problem. Anyone know the compression ratio of the 2.8?

You should also decide if you're going with a single or twin turbo set-up also. If you have the room, I would go with a single larger turbo. You just have to take in consideration of all the plumbing that it's going to consist of. You will have to plan all that out so you can get and idea of what kind of set-up will suit you best.

You should also decide on how much boost you want to run. Do you have any idea how much you would be able to run safely?

I can get you a 2.8L turbo buick motor for 300.00. It will probably need a rebuild. Its been sitting a few years. It is out of a..? 79' to 81' (My buddy cant remember what year)T-Type Regal. He got the car for some work he did, pulled the motor, and parted the rest. He meant to use it for a project but never got around to it, so its been sitting about 5-6 years. The car was running when he pulled it.
I have made a lot of money in my life, most of which I spent on cars and women.<p>The rest I have blown.

I'd like to keep my motor (as it has just been freshly rebuilt), and simply turbocharge it, but thank you for the offer Slow-N-ugly.

daWhoady, I was thinking of a twin turbo setup, but if a larger single turbo is cheaper than a twin turbo, and works better, then I'm all for it.

I'm going to have to do some more research on the engine.
