• Powerdyne completed....All systems go. (MPG update)

(updated) MPG: Before Powerdyne but with 3" exhaust, FTRAIK, 180* thermo and 1.9 rockers MPG was 19. With the addition of the 6 psi powerdyne the gas mileage has dropped to 18.5. Not bad at all. This has been tracked with 2 tanks at 13 gallons each. (240 miles = 18.5 mpg)

Premium 92 octane fuel, NGK TR6 @ .035, Blower intake is integrated with the K&N filtered FTRAIK.

This is on a daily commute...equal parts city/hwy.
Before the powerdyne I drove like I had a Firebird. With the powerdyne I drive like I have a supercharged Firebird...in other words...I never seem to take it easy. This dude be pretty happy with the gas mileage to power ratio.

I have yet to take car on extended ALL HWY trip. I would expect 25mpg or better in that case. (end update)

Ok, I can see how our stock rear ends and stock auto trans can wear out prematurely.

This car is putting out some torque. OMG.

Just broke the tires loose punching from a 25 mph roll. I was all wiggling sideways down a nearby residential street. YEEHAA! Sometimes burnt rubber smells good. :D

Install Overview: Adapted 95-97 kit to a 2001 straight TB car. Custom Flex hose blower to stock/smooth lid-FTRAIK airbox. Custom discharge tubing...(some heavy duty smooth lined hi pressure flex hose used...needed to make the North-South TB vs. Blower discharge port alignment) Alluminum mandrel bends and Ebay reducer/couplers as well. Used stock v8 IAT sensor grommet...very nice and clean...no goopy rtv silicone to mess with. This also leaves the stock airbox flex coupler sealed as it is not missing the IAT sensor. JD Powerwrap, TB PCV bypass, threaded zzp breather, grooved 6 lbs pulley, FMU works perfectly...46 psi normal...67-71 psi at WOT. NGK TR6 plugs gapped to .035. Tripple pod A pillar - mechanical boost gauge, digital F/P and narrow band A/F ratio gauge. On the rich side at WOT.

Running Premium 92 octane.

NO TPS code...cross my fingers...nock on wood.

This is deffinatly a fast car. You need to pay attention and counter steer when punched to WOT at slower speeds like up to 30-35 mph or so. NICE. Fun.

Plan on fine tuning the intake sytem with v8 whisper lid. (center mounted port...more clearance with TB...thanks John D.)

Plan on fine tuning discharge tubing. Just got it working....not the best...but it works for now. (after v8 air lid can fit 3" TB elbow...3 inch piping, etc.)

Have not installed Crane Timing Retard module. As stated above this is a kit for a 95-97 adapted to a drive by wire straight TB 2001. I believe the crane is incompatible with the DBW TB??? I think the TMC is now shipped with the newer kits...anyone know if that is a 'must use the TMC on newer cars" scenario or will the older Crane TRC work ok? Some members have mentioned not using any timing retard controllers with 6 lbs pulley, 2 heat range colder plugs and premium 92 octane fuel. I do not hear detonation...(but the 3" exhaust is, um...loud at WOT) car hauls... plain and simple. Any experienced feedback conerning the crane TRC with DBW car, yea or nay or feedback concerning possible stupidity of running up to 6 psi boost with no timing retard appreciated.

Oh, max psi so far was about 5. (less than perfect discharge tubing and maybe a little slippage...Just don't feel comfortable getting the belt EXTREMLY tight...concerned with wearing out the other accessories such as the water pump pulley bearing, etc.

Anyway...Thanks to all the awesome members here at the forum. Your wealth of knowledge and experience is greatly appreciated to say the least.

Oh, website updated soon with pics of the ugly tubing, etc.

Congrats! planning on upping the boost/ taking it for track duty any time soon??

its always fun to go puch the throttle with a new mod installed, but wow, i can't imagine going from driving it at near stock to having that much power the next time you got in it. once again congrats, good luck, and keep us updated. i for one am curious about gas mileage and track times/kills ;)

Thanks man,
Yea, it's a helluva bolt on, that's for sure.
Will definatly visit track in the spring.

In no hurry to jump in with a 9psi pulley just yet. probably will though, when I feel like swapping out fuel pumps and what not.

sweeeeeeeeet ...my car was always completely fine running 6 psi without the TRC even installed..i just ran stock plugs gapped at .035 and 92+ octane fuel..also..i had to tighten the CRAP out of the belt to get 6 psi..had it like that for almost a year or so without any problems

you should go ahead and do the john d wrap to prevent slippage now that idv6 brings that point up.

A comment regarding the auto trans and longevity... I had talked to Mach Performance about their kit sometime last year, and they had mentioned that the computer needed to be tuned to increase the line pressure in the trans to prevent slippage from the increase in torque. You may want to look into that before you destroy the trans. Sounds like it's an impressive performer though! Good work!

He says he has it done already.

Congrats on the blower! Good to see someone else adding themselves to the sc list. Powerdynes are solid kits so enjoy it.

Got that covered. I bought a used Hypertech PP3 here a few months ago. That little gadget is prett nice with Auto Trans car. Tried 50%, 75% and 100% shift firmness settings. It is currently on 100%. I will probably leave it there. Nice and firm. Definatly a little shift kit feel to it. Also use the fan temps, +100 rpm rev limit and such. The premium fuel 'performance tune' was noticable with the rockers...more so with the new exhaust. That feature had to go when I formaly installed the powerdyne yesterday. I plan on selling the Hypertech when I upgrade to real tuning software. (got SES code from exhaust a couple days ago...thought I was going to make it...oh well.)
I plan on leaving the hyppertech program on PCM and download that as bin file...then replace stock tune and download that as stock bin file. I hope to shorten the learning curve of software by being able to compare the two. Anyway, that is all off topic.

Getting sideways at 25 mph...that felt so good.

I'm jealous now! Go to the track now and get some times. I've been dying to see what the powerdyne's can do on a setup like that.

That's awesome, congrats. Try 9psi, that'll scare the heck out of you.

If you could put in 93 octane, you may not need crane timing.

How did you do the grooves on that pully?

That is impressive! Good to hear your boost is working well also. Your rear end should be able to handle the extra power with little to no problems. Your 4l60E is the same one that comes in the Ls1 engine but the stall is lower. Try a

BMR Torque arm and an aluminum driveshaft. These are a couple of bolt on mods that beef up the rearend. Use some Lucas transmission oil stabilizer on your next filter change! Hope you get some performance tires as well! Gonna turn the

The pulley is an ASP Racing 6lbs with the cross cut grooves. (6 grooves that run from the back of pulley to the front of pulley. The basic ASP style I believe.) it is not the spiral type grooves. If I were dedicated to the 6 lbs pulley I might have a center spiral groove cut as well...as some of ya'll have tried and researched.

Hey MT, weren't you going to do some custom cutting on your ASP pulley when you got your powerdyne back from rebuild? I don't think I saw a post about that. How did it go?

New topic: Belt tensioner that came with kit had a plastic pulley. I switched that with the stock metal tesioner pulley. The 103 dayco was too short (believe me I tried) to fit with the John D wrap so I am using the longer belt that came with the kit. There is still room in the tensioner for more tension (belt can barely turn sideways...pretty tight...but could be tighter) Anyway, I think I will make a custom pulley tensioner tool out of a small crowbar or something...you know those little nail pullers...I forget what they are called. Shove the 90 degree section into the tensioner bracket and then push down on the pulley. I am already doing that with a screw driver...but a 90 degree would give far more leverage and distance.

Hey Grayman nice to hear you got your system going sorry I never got those instructions to you, my sister kept on putting off scanning them long enough to where I forgot about them. they are still sitting her computer. I have been out of the forced induction loop for awhile because of my move to florida and other car problems like transmission, clutch, and now my fuel pump. I have posted my problems in the other sections of the message boards (general tech and drive train) but no one seems to be much help there. They don't seem to be nearly as knowledgeable as the forced induction guys. So if you or anybody else could you please look at my other posts in those forums and give me some input.

Oh and by the way I would love to see some pictures of how you got the air lid to work if you have the time to send them to me.

Also, do you know what pulley to get when you want to go to 9 PSI and where to get it. I know I could do a search put this computer I am using now is slow as @@@@ and keeps locking up.

Thanks for all your help on my set up I used everytihng you sent me especially the PVC block pictures they were great help. Wish I could have been around the board more to help you more I hope I was some help though. I will be around alot now that I finally have a computer to use.
see ya

Be VERY careful with the HPP3 and the blower. You will always want to run the premium gas obviously, but the HPP3 advances your timing even beyond stock...not always a good combo. I'd sell that POS and get a real tune for the same or less cash!
