  • What is the cheapest horespower?

I have a little challenge by my younger brother's friend. He is getting a Mustang GT in October and I have my 1997 Camaro V6. I need some good modifications to beat him at the drag strip by October of this year. If anyone has some good suggestions, please feel free to chime in! Will greatly appreciate it...

I would say my budget is $4,000.00 for this summer project and I will do the mods. in August or September.

Heh...with 4,000 bucks he can get more than nitrous.
But...its no big suprise thats what you advised...
Get full intake and exhaust, 3.42's and LSD, and then throw a bottle on that and you'll stomp all over him.
(And what year mustang? If its a pre99 you wont even need nitrous if you do the other mods...nitrous will just WASTE him)

i say turbo for 2800 and a nice turbo cam (1200 or so).... any maybe p/p your heads (800 or so), that would be the best way, and maybe even a 50 shot on top

If his goal is just to beat this GT at the track he doesnt need to blow all his money on a turbo and cam. He should just get himself a nice all around setup for around 1500-2000 and put some juice on it and have some money to kill if he wants. Plus putting a cam in can be a lot more work and trouble than people want to do.
But like I said before...nitrous wont be necessary if its a pre-99 mustang

i agree, for a track/street car 373's are his best bet. great excel without losing to much top end.

Cheap and horsepower don't belong in the same sentence. But, since you have $4,000... you could get a pretty nice little setup. I'd go the forced induction route and stay as far away from nitrous as i could, but that's just me. I'd get a nice turbo going, and spend the remaining amount on getting the rest of your car to handle it.. i.e. a clutch, suspension, etc. Don't try to get as much HP out of your engine as you can without spending a dime on your drive train... you're just setting yourself up for huge problems down the road.

Yea make sure you get a complete exhaust (headers, cat, and cat back) first along with a CAI so you can handle the turbo or whatever later. Also get gears and LSD, along with maybe a aluminum driveshaft. Once you got the exhaust and drivetrain all solved, move on to the bottle or forced induction.

I wasn't really planning on nitrous. I was thinking of trying a turbo kit. Viper, i can get one for 2800? Is that the entire kit with all I would need? Also, with the turbo kit, running a 3" pipe all the way to the muffler, are there headers that come together at 3"? I think stock ones are 2.5" right?

                      Thanks everyone!

Tiago, he is on the boards here has a turbo kit for around 2800. He is pulling some nice dyno numbers with it to. Try talking to him about the next group purchase for his turbo.

I didn't know if he had 3.23's or 3.08's. He never said if he was an auto or manual. And the best times here have been run on 3.42's...or so I thought....

any major gain in power will cause the rear suspension to hop like crazy if ur tires grip well. the grip u gained from the massive 17x11 rims and rubber in the rear will be wasted in wheel hop. if u have 3.23's ur fine. here's some things u should have taken care of first:

                              LSD
                              LCA's
                              Intake/3" Exhaust, 3" cat

these will get u a good gain. intake means up to the TB. If u have an auto, the a TC will definitely be on the top of ur list as well, since it'll drop ur times by 1/2 a second easy, if made custom to ur car, and can be had for less than $1000. maybe a performance tranny rebuild kit from KDS for $500 to get all power to the rear wheels possible, but isn't necesary.

after that, i'd just get a NOS-zle direct port kit for $1200 and keep it between 75-100 shot. Also install a bigger fuel pump at the same time, and an MSD-DIS-4, coil packs, wires, and plugs to make sure everything is burned completely and to make use of every bit of air/fuel u will gain from future performance mods.

I don't think that the turbo kits on the board are sold w/ cat-back systems. they work w/ stock headers and have a custom down-pipe that goes to the cat.
2001 Arctic White Firebird<br />More mods than I\'m allowed to list!
