  • turbo location idea...?

ive been thinking about different setups, more or less just going over them in my head. during the school year i dont have the car in front of me, but i just wanted to get your thoughts on a setup like this... heres my idea:

    http://www.thenebula.com/carpics/pics4/setup1.JPG

right after the cat when my s pipe curves over towards the driver's side. i'd just cut it and put the turbo in there like that. i know its a long shot, but i guess you never know till you try. id be able to delete that o2 sensor right after the cat, but im not sure about that bracket thats right there. is there anything im totally missing that would say this just would not work at all.

It will work, but it will have to use an oil scavenge pump because its as low or lower than the oil level in the pan.

the bracket you mention (i think) is a horizontal bracket that attaches to the rear of the S pipe...right? that bracket is not 'mandatory'. it mounts to a rubber cusshioned hanger. it reduces vibrations between exhaust system and the car and it is also an exhaust hanger...but not mandatory...expecially if you have a custom exhaust for a turbo. that horizontal hanger is most likely th eleast of your worries.

if you are taking about the tunnel brace that runs sideways to the car that is also not 'mandatory.'
earlier years (older than my 2001) have two piece driveshafts and those cars have some kind of brace or something that is needed with the two piece drive shaft. others can help you with that.

would there be any issues running the turbo post cat? ive never heard of anything, but i cant ever remember seeing a cat on an sts turbo. maybe they have kept the cat's, i just dont remember ever really seeing one.

and i was talking about the horizontal bracket that you talked about first. i suppose i could move the entire setup back, and work around the tunnel brace to make more room in front for the induction tube, but i havnt really thought that far in advance yet.

would ground clearance be an issue at this point do you think? obviously it wouldnt be ideal, but my car rarely see's rough roads or speed bumps anyway. im thinkin it wont be any lower that the cutout i allready have...

I spent ALOT of time researching this idea over the old STS design that I had. Theoretically it would work great and decrease your spool time and
still have all the benefits of a remote style turbo without the hassel of excess work. The problem is that it is just too low in the chassis to be a beneficial idea unless you can raise the height of the ride by 3 to five inches (it will look crazy). It is much better suited to trucks and SUVS that have enought clearance. All someone has to do is to cut the CAT off. The STS is designed to be environmentally friendly however you are good to go if don't have to take your car to inspection. I like the fact that it would retain the look of the factory exhaust system from the rear of the car.
Good luck trying. I am eager to see if someone can make it work. I am sure that it can work but it will take some DEVIOUS planning and consideration. The guy at the muffler shop who helped me with my STS said I would have to cut up the floorboard first. I canceled the plan after that and am building a front mounted unit instead.

Flip your stock manifolds over and get a custom front swept y pipe made. It would be ideal, cheap and less hassle.

it wouldnt happen till summer, and as we all know, plans tend to change. my car isnt lowered, nor will it ever be. im not familiar with any sort of accurate dimensions of even a small turbo, and i dont know offhand how high the underbody of the car sits off the ground. i personally wouldnt be willing to lift the car even an inch for a turbo setup. id rather go traditional sts. ill still look into this when i finally get a chance. my car is stock height, and i always keep it on nice roads. ive never had problems scrapint my cutout, but i sure wouldnt want to smash the turbo.

You will be happier than a runaway slave with an STS kit. Let me know if you need any tech help or info on how to set it up. I will be glad to
send you preliminary pics of what my car looked like too.
By the way, I don't think that you can just turn the headers around on our cars and connect a new y pipe for a front mount unit. Please correct me if I am wrong, but if that were so then someone would have already tried that.

i would very much like those pictures. email them to me if you get a chance.

i have no idea about flipping the manifolds though... seems like that would be just as tight of a fit for different reasons.

what about going with a relatively small turbo as far as its overall size. would a smaller turbo help with the fitment ussues?

of course, we can sit around and talk about what might fit and what wont, but theres only one way to find out.

If it is for the STS then a .63 or .48 A/R turbine will work well (or anything in between).
If you go with the project by placing the turbine where your cat is or after the factory y-pipe then you will need nothing smaller than a .63. The further the distance from the engine heads menas the smaller the turbine. I will send you the pics at the address you have in your profile.
Remember they were jsut preliminary and I sold the kit to a friend in California. I made copies of the piping so that I can easily make another. Let me know what you think tomorrow. I have to leave from work for now. (I am going to look into that header idea too)

                      sounds good, thanks a lot.

and by the way, how big of a difference would the compressor side a/r make in this case?

Not a whole lot. You could use a larger compressor and wheel however. I think mine was a .70.

                          opinions on this purchase?

                          http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T3-T4...01089975QQrdZ1

the wastegate would need a lower psi spring. can a wastegate like this be vented directly into the air, or does it need to be rounted to the exhaust?
