  • several turbo questions

1.) Cosmetic issues aside, does it make any difference what sort of piping is used for the piping on the intake side? Can it be the same as the turbine/downpipe side?

2.) Where is the IAT sensor typically located in a turbo setup? It it just before the throttle body as usual?

3.) In all the setup pictures i see, it looks as though the turbo is supported solely by the piping, is this correct? It would seem to be it would need to be bracketed in some way.

4.) Can all external wastegates be vented into the air, or must some be passed into the downpipe?

5.) How do you go about tuning the pressure at which a blow off valve opens? Is a blow off valve needed on an A4, i thought i read that it wasn't.

    1) Intake side can be whatever, usually the hotside pipes are heavier so people may use something with a thinner wall.

    3) You can support it by just the piping, but it will add stress to your headers/manifolds. If it's a bigger turbo then it'd be better to support it to prevent premature stress failure in the headers.

    4) Wastegates generally do get passed into the downpipe, it usually connects to the down pipe or can be vented if you wanna. Doesnt really matter once it's left the turbo where it goes.

    5) You can change springs on the BOV to adjust it's valve pressure. An A4 does still need one, you let off the gas at some point...

how unsafe would running 5-6 non-intercooled psi be (traditional mounted turbo... something like fff) on the stock timing with just 91-93 octane and a fmu. (no bigger injectors) I also have a maft (not plus) and autotap (and i could go wideband) so i could play with the o2 readings.

bad idea? or would i be ok...

It will do just fine for 5 to 6 psi. Trust me, the FMU with the translator will provide more than enough fuel for the FI. Get a larger intank pump if you can if you really want to go higher. You really need the MAFT+ for reducing the timing after 6psi.

You dont have to use an intercooler but I would suggest setting up a DIY alcohol or methanol system. You can make these for about $120.00
Do a search because they details are EVERYWHERE!
You now can turn up the boost safely without adding more fuel because the air charge will be much, much cooler. I am running an intercooler and the DIY sprayer. I am adapting a line from the pump to spray the mixture in front of the intercooler as well as inside the throttlebody.
          Can you say overkill?

im probably just going to start out at about 5 psi, with what ive allready got. then, as things progress, ill probably end up upgrading to the maft+ and so on.

6 psi PD and 6 psi turbo = different the turbos push alot more CFM (what really matters) then the PD does, witch is why the turbo number are a bit better

the price difference from what i've seen is tremendous. i have the know-how and the tools to create my own, so thats what im going to do. ive heard of people keeping it under the 1000 dollar mark. im sure the quality of the parts there is not very great, but even 1500 is better than 3000+

id feel a bit uneasy running the turbo without an fmu. i dont plan on an external fuel pump unless someone can tell me why thats a bad idea.

also, while the remote mount seems like a fine idea, i think a front mount would be easier for me to craft up. i plan on running the pipe under the k member from my pacesetters, sort of like the fff kit, and the ground clearance issues scare me a bit, but not enough to keep me from trying it out. the car has mostly turned into a show car anyway, and it never sees rough roads. i never even scrape the wings west air diffuser, and that thing is LOW! Im going to give it a try. The only people who never make mistakes are the people who dont try in the first place.

To get a little better clearance under the K-member you can use oval pipe, it will save you about an inch of Ground clearance.

I just looked at pictures of links and it looks to me like he's running a foward swept kit.

Also regarding the BOV. Some of the information given wasn't exactly correct. The BOV runs off of a VAC line, not a spring. An internal wastegate runs off of a spring, and that spring controls at which PSI to let air vent out. External wastegates and BOV's both decide how much boost to let off by VAC line.

BOV do you a spring but BOV only open when it sees vacum

if the spring in the BOV is 2 week high boost can push it open
