  • Ready to turbo my car.

I have a 1997 3.8L camaro and I've been thinking about turbocharging my car. I've got 2.5k saved up and want to make sure I can afford everything before I start buying it. So what do I need, and why? I've seen that a MSD dis 4 ignition is usually purchased but why? I know I need a boost gauge, turbo, intercooler, boost controller, custom manifold/header, and piping. I have access to my parents automotive shop, and my uncles machine shop so hopefully I can install it myself. Oh, what type of turbo should I buy? I'd like to build boost as low as possible. I plan on buying a intense racing block and forged pistons next so I would like for the turbo to be able to produce around 400-450hp when I upgrade the engine. But I just want to run 10 psi now. Oh and would it be easier to do a single or twin turbo setup? I'm really not to worried about the $$$ if I need to save a little longer I will. I just want to to do it right the 1st time. I hope this post wasn't too long if I missed anything let me know.

if you have to ask all these questions you should not be getting into what you are talking about.....unless you pay someone and keep paying and paying...

What you need to do is a lot lot lot of reaserch and get all that info on this forum and other places on the web, then get your azz to the Sick-sixx forum in regional, We've helped Tiago put together his turbo on his 3.4, im sure we'd all be willing to lend a hand, especially if you have access to a shop...and hopefully a LIFT.

I wouldn't start until I had at least $6000 to start with. You will need the turbo anywhere from $550-1900. An itercooler $300-600 for the core alone, then you have the end tanks. You'd also need a 255lph or higher fuel pump. Larger injectors. Computer programing. Blow-off valve. Waste gate(s). Exhaust manifolds. Crossover pipe(if going single turbo). Stronger bottom end. Head work. Intake plumbing. And a lot of praying. You also have odds and ends that can run up to a couple hundred dollars.

Edit: Forgot to add the cost of dyno time and tuning.

Anybody who pays 1900 for a turbo is a ****ing moron, at least one that would power a 3.4.

What he said. You need to do a lot of research and plan it all out.

Your looking at spending $600-$900 for a new turbo and maybe $1000+ for a new custom intercooler.

If you don't spend a lot of money now; you'll just end up spending more money later. I've seen a Civic turbo kit ending with a total cost of $8000. :(

Yeah but you don't have to dump it all in at once. You could have a nice setup to run 5 or 6psi for a lot cheaper than it would cost to run 10psi reliably. Then simply add the on as you need and get the money. Just make sure you don't get dumb and bump up the boost when your setup (fuel/timing) can't handle it.
