  • My Powerdyne sounds like an airplane.

First off, I finally got my smog issue taken care off. After failing one test after another it was obvious I should have taken it to this guy where I usually gas up. He passed me and overlooked at my mods. I promised him not to tell.

Because of that the SC was out for two months and I reinstalled it last night. Now it's making a funny noise. I usually just hear a whistle but I also hear a loud noise too. It wasn't like that before.

I wonder if it's the bearings? Has anyone have this problem?

I've had my blower for 6 years now and it had it's share of abuse but it's been extremely reliable.

I have high temp bearings rated at 4 tons and kevlar belt. Maybe it's time to change them. I'm going to remove it tomorrow and see what is wrong.

If you guys have some idea. Please share.

Make sure the pulley is tight on the Powerdyne, they can work loose if not loctighted on and cause a racket. Any chance some of the clearances changed when remounting? Carefully check the belt routeing. If your positive it's the Powerdyne and want to tackle the internals here is a link I found showing how to change the belt and two of the four bearings. To remove the cover I had to apply heat, then it comes off fairly easy.

    Good Luck

Thanks Hank. I got that website too. But from what I know the two bearings are removeable. But the other two on the other side are very difficutlt and requires pressure press.

When it was running I put my ear on the head unit and it's internally coming from it. I pulled it out again tonight. The pulley is on tight. The impellers are running evenly. When I rotate it by hand to make a couple of revolution it sounded normal.

I got a quote from this guy from ebay and he would install my PD rebuild kit for two hundred dollars. We'll see though. I want to try one more thing before I do that.

Haven't been to the track yet. I drive the Camaro very little, it just turned 4k miles. The propane is disconnected at the moment.

I bought my Powerdyne off this board over a year ago. I changed the two bearings and belt because of an ominous rumble I could hear and feel from the Powerdyne, no "airplane sound". If you enjoy working on your own stuff I would still at least remove the shell around the impeller and have a look see. In fact I would also pop the cover and have a look inside at the belt. The cover comes off much easier if heat is applied around the two bearings, careful not to overheat the housing. Hope you get it sorted out soon, I know I would sure miss the fantastic low end torque if my Powerdyne was off-line.

I was thinking about that too last night. But if I'm going to do it I might as well do all four of them. We'll see though.

I know what you mean man. The past two months when my blower was out. It was pure toture. I can't believe the difference in power.

Do you have a website? I would like to check out your ride.

Yeah, the Powerdyne sure changes the driving experience, especially since I upgraded to the JohnD wrap. No website for the car...sorry. Just a low res photo from my crappy digital camera.

It's most likely the bearings. Mine did the same thing before I sent it back to Powerdyne to be re-built.
