  • STS rear-mount turbo

    http://ststurbo.com/

don't know if you guys saw this yet. rear-mounted turbo kit...yes, the turbo pretty much takes the place of the muffler. there are LS1's making over 400 rwhp with this thing. it works just like a regular turbo, only you don't need to make any modifications to the engine itself or the engine bay. very interesting....i wonder if the LS1 kit could be modified to fit on a V6...

The turbo itself would not be the best choice for the L36, it is set up for the larger LS1 engine. And for $4k on a system that you need to change the turbo, why not buy FFF's kit for $3k, or make your own for even cheaper (if you know how)

Yes, everyone's seen it. If you just want a system that works, and thats it, STS is for you. IF you want a properly designed system with some potential, STS is not for you. V6 cars would have a much harder time making that setup work at all.. they move alot less exhaust than an LT1/LS1 car.

Too true. STS is not a setup you'd want if you're looking for a kit with true potential. The lack of an intercooler, and the fact that STS advertises that the long intake pipe "acts" as an intercooler would turn me off instantly if i were a perspective buyer.

Here's another way of looking at it. Look at all the vehicle manufacturers who have designed and sold a car with a turbo. They put millions of dollars and years of time into designing these cars. Notice NOT ONE of them designed a rear mount setup, and all of them kept the turbo as close to the engine (and therefore the hottest exhaust gasses) as possible? Kinda makes you think, doesn't it?

You don't know what they were thinking? Although the 944 was supposed to become an "entry level" model, it was named the Best Handling Car of 1985 by Car and Driver (on the 10Best list for 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1986). The front-engine rear-transmission setup allowed for a near 50-50 weight distibution for the 924 race car. That's what they were thinking. It was also the one of, if not the fastest four cylinders you could buy. The 911 line preserves the rear engine setup more for nostalgia than for performance.

PS. They haven't made any 924's, 944'2, or 968's in a long time. All current Porsche turbo models are rear mount.

I think ATGNAG (AllTheGoodNamesAreGone) was kidding. (i.e. who would ever put a turbo in front with an engine up front).

I was kidding the first time too. But the second time I was being an ***.

The answer to that question is people who want to make an entry level bolt on kit for a vehicle with limited space in the engine compartment.
