I read a while back in Hot Rod that it is better to turbocharge a smaller engine than it is to supercharge it. I think that is a true statement because how many people do you see with 500 inch big blocks with turbos? The only problem obviously with a turbo is the amount of work, and the fact that there are no over the counter kits available. I think that would be a better gain by turbocharging. What the hell do you guys think??

quote:
it's harder to turbo a big block since not many huge turbos are made for that kind of displacement. i could see running 2 turbo's off each bank, totaling 4 turbos, but that could get expensive real quick.

Are you kidding me, there are a lot of turbos that will work on larger displacement engines, must people go with a pair like the T3/T4 combo.
Large engines generaly produce huge amounts of torque at lower RPMs. Large engines cannot supply a lot of RPMs like smaller engines without a huge investment. To get power out of a small displacement engine, you'll need to wind for the sky, and a turbo is perfect for supplying that kind of boost. Versus a large engine that just needs air at or around 3000-5000 rpms where super charging is great. But for a combination of great gas milage and power, the turbo can't be beat, boosting only when there is a need.1995 Firebird 3.8 A4, 140,000 miles and going strong
Basically Stock, college=poor
Junior Mechanical Engineering Student: Milwaukee School of Engineering; Cpl, MN Army National Guard...just got promoted :)

Alot of big block owners go for SC because the boost is linear and they get alot of bottom end torque and high end HP. They are not looking for high psi boost in the first place, so turbo is not logical. Since there compression is around 9-10 it makes sense to just hook up a 4-6 lbs root type blower. Ever stood next to a 1973 455 SC TA which makes well over 2000 hp. That is insane.
Turbo is better than SC in many ways. But yeah turbo would be an excellent set up for our cars. But I wouldn't run more than 8 psi boost.
