  • Intercooler placement

Seeing how I have the car scattered around the garage/parking lot ... I'm kinda thinking of changing my horizontally placed intercooler to a front mount.

Looking for suggestions, comments, pictures ... etc....

Will be painting and test fitting stuff today. Post up, email or AIM.

    Thank you for any help!

There was a Red WS6 that had a front mount setup, and the pics used to be all over the place. Anyway, they removed the front bumper support to mount it and cut out the front license plate area (only the trapezoidal recess that is molded into the bumper) in order to get air flow. It looked pretty good, and isn't as radical as removing a large section of the bumper.

        Here's my 24x12x3 intercooler:

Notice the styrofoam molding, which is part of the bumper support. Alot of people remove that, which is a VERY bad idea. It makes sure your bumper keeps its shape in hot temps and direct sunlight.

Here's what the finished install looks like.

Unless you kneel down and put your face right up to the grille, you can't even tell there's an intercooler back there at all.

A front mount on a Firebird is a little more complicated than on a Camaro, if you want it to look good., however that bumper off shot is a good approximation of where you can mount it.

I've seen firebird's with it mounted in the exact same way. You just need to come up with a different way to get air to it, which, depending on how good you are at making ducting, isn't the end of the world.
