• Dry Sump Oiling w/ a turbo.

Hey everyone, need some help here.
On a dry sump oil system, on a motor that also contains a turbo, I need to know where to send oil to the turbo and where to recover the oil.
I am assuming I can branch off of the high pressure line and run it to the turbo.
When it comes to recovery, I have two options:
A) Run the return line back into the pan, and have the low pressure pump suck it up. -seems kind of a pointless.
B) Have the turbo return line go through a filter, and then directly back to the tank. Is this possible without problems? Thanks.

depending where your tank is, jsut dump it back in there. A fiter in teh return line will cause leaky seals. Return line can't have anything on it unless you runa oil pump on the return side to pull oil out of the turbo.

Awesome, My plans so far have the high pressure feed line going into the motor, and the turbo, then having the turbo's oil going directly back to the tank, along with the low pressure pump (return) line from the motor. From the tank to the filter and back into the high pressure pump.
The filter should go right before the oil from the tank hits the pump, to avoid damaging the pump.
Sound good?

sounds good, as long as the turbo return line drains into the tank by pure gravity.

Yep, the tank is lower than the turbo...
Its just an itty bitty turbo too. So cute.
Its for this bad boy, btw.

awesome, I almost got into the formula team while I was at school but I soon realized most of them didn't know alot about cars/racing, plus I already had my own race car/work to deal with.

These guys know quite a bit.
They build everything, even the PCM for the motor.
Some of them do anyways.
I get to do the oiling, and there is a lot of pressure on the oiling team because they caused the car to fail last year.
The dry sump should cover it.

thats the truth

and good luck with the turbo on the formula car.... in my 2 years with the program the turbo cars seemed to have too much trouble tuning the car to make it very beneficial, not to mention the added costs that would be encountered in the financial annalisys

Our ECE team makes us an engine management system.
Tuning is their problem.
Our team does about average every year, but we are looking to get better. This is my first year, I will see how it goes.

A Lexus teammate of mine, Mike Tam, helped make the Dry Sump on Virginia Tech's formula car. You might drop them a line.

We got it all figured out now. I just wanted to be prepared in case someone tried to mock it up wrong and argue about it. Thanks guys.
