so I was wondering, if I dumped the wastegate down to say, 4psi and then used a boost controller to pull it up to 7psi (at the most), could I run this small of a turbo on the 3.8L?

I wanted to drop it to 4psi at the wastegate and pull it to 7psi at the boost controller in order to keep it from trying to make 11-14psi for that volume of air (twice the 2L engine it comes on) and thus reducing the load on the turbo.

Does that make sense? Does anyone know the answer to this or even what I'm trying to do?

Theoretically it can be done.. but it's obviously not the most efficient way of going about it. Sounds to me like it would be a bit on the unreliable side. You'd probably be better off going with a bigger turbo altogether. Using the turbo of off a 2.0L on a car with almost twice the displacement isn't really a good idea, unless you're using 2 of them

That little turbo in a big engine will not work that great.
The turbo would be working on the far right end of the compressor map most likely.
The compressor would have to spin super fast to move that volume of air through there and that would heat up the air a lot. Even at low boost.
To make the most power with the least work from the turbo you must size it right.
With any engine all parts must be sized to the appication if you want it to run right.
