Intercooler Idea...

I had an idea the other day while watching monster garage. They were building some speed mountain race car. On the car they had this thing that sprayed water onto the radiator to keep it cool. Well I thought couldn't you do that except spray it on an intercooler? You could use your windshield wiper fluid tank to hold the water or whatever you want to cool with, use the same controls to operate it, the only thing you would have to modify is the placement of the spray nozzles. Is this a good idea or am I missing a important part of the puzzle?

yeah...that show rocks...i remember a while back they made a big 4 wheel drive dirt corvette..it was awesome...anyways...yeah...sounds like a cool idea to me...i dont know much about intercoolers...but seems like it would be really useful to cool the outside from engine heat...hurry up and pattent a kit man! lol..would be really custom too

yupp.. intercooler sprayers are pretty simple to make.. hell sti's come with them stock..

you could make your own with a pump.. a switch.. some sprayer jets and a little bit of silicone hose..

if you wanted to be really ghetto you could probably get it all done for a few dollers..

get a small 12 volt water fountan pump..
10-15$
get some hose and fittings $10

hook it up to the cars washer bottel.. or get a little one elsewhere..

then butcher some old hand sprayers..

so.. it can all be done for $50 or so..

I will probably do it when i get an intercooler..

you shouldn't even need a pump, just the sprayers. You could use the pump that pumps the windshield washer fluid. I think it can be done for under $15

lol, so as you turn your windshield sprayers on you wipers go up and down... :rolleyes:

if your gonna use a liquid use something that evaporates quick and cool. like alcohol.. pshh

Ya. Spray that alcohol (i.e fuel) all over something hot.

Nice concept!! Does not really work except if IC is heatsoaked...which will theoretically happen when roadracing...and that thing better not puddle on the floor...lol!!

Now ppl have sworn up & down using Nitrous...but till someone shows empirical data...it is still not a real world mod!!

rofl.. i guess you could use the pump for the windsheild.. but the method i came up with allows you to spray water on the windsheild as well, in case of an emergency bird turd or some thing..

regardless.. not to hard to pull of even a complete system that dosent use the windsheld bottle for under $50..

it will consists of some used motor.. a pepsi bottle.. and straws..

oh you can do it for less then that, just use the little hand sparyer in its complete form and then just run a hose from it to the IC. Now you have a hand pumped IC cooler and all for about 10 bucks that will be just as usefull. water will only help if the IC is heatsoaked folks, and only for a limited time. i suggest you look at nitrous spray bars if you really want to cool your IC down. The heat transfer involved in heating the water is no where near the change achieved from a spray bar. not trying to be an azz just letting you know it wont help before you spend money on this nonsense.

this is interesting...im wondering...is there any benefit in spraying a blower?..the actual head unit?..is there too much risk of wetting the belt/other components?...cool idea

i would not bother, i would be real surprised if you head unit is overheating and that would be the only reason to do that. spaying the IC is much more efficient if you are just wanting to cool the air charge.
